Since Spring is in the air and planting has begun, I thought I would start this thread so everyone can share what they are planting and maybe help others that might need some gardening help and then post their beautiful flowers and gardens.

I just finished planting some Phlox and Peonys. I seem to have a real problem getting Peonys to grow so if they don't make it this year, then I'm giving up on them!

Now if you want to know anything about Hibiscus, I'm the person you need to ask. I love Hibiscus and have a yard full of the plants.
This is one of my hardy ones that come back every year and has dinner plate size blooms.

Yes, I need help with Carolina Jessamine... some call it Jasmine.

I bought several large vines of it last summer, and planted them on trellises... They turned brown. Now I read they're not suppose to be grown north of Oklahoma City.

I did fertilize them in fall, and they've been watered and re-fertilized... They're still brown.

Does anyone know if they'll regrow from the roots?

LOL I planted Morning Glories in a bowl they all came up qick and strong. Well...one day I checked them and half the tops were off and in the dirt then two days later the other half were in the dirt just stubs sticking up. I am not sure but I think a cat likes them. Can't think of anything else. So we will leave those in the dirt and see what they do but just incase I got more seeds tonight and will try again.

I cannot grow any carnations, it just seems to be too hot here for them. The rabbits keep eating all my baby hollyhocks. Just really hacks me off as the neighbors have great hollyhocks. Do you have different types of soil in your yard freethinker? My phlox will grow in one area but not another. The only way to know about your plant regrowing is to wait and see. If it is supposed to be a perennial vine and hasn't completely died it should. It could be it is just having ahard time getting started. My trumpet vine was reallly slow to take off. It was three years before the darn thing bloomed. I was really surprised as they grew like a wild thing at my parents farm in Oklahoma. If your winter was as cold as ours was here, it could be that it might have actually been too cold for your plant. I am still reserving judgement on whether my butterfly bush is coming back.

That's what I fear... that the temp just dropped too low this year for the Jessamine to survive. A few more years growth, and they might have survived.

But yes, the soil has to be different from area to area... Honeysuckle will grow like crazy in some of it, and get covered with fungus in other areas, and I've gone through all the usual cures for that...

All of the trees and shrubs have done well... those that didn't get snapped in circular winds.

Freethinker,
They should if the roots are not dead. Are the vines brittle and break easy down by the ground? If so, your plant(s) may be dead. If they still bend then you might try and waiting to see if they will start greening up or blooming later on. I looked at some pics of one of the plants and the vines are brown to reddish brown in color. I would cut one of the vines back to about 3-5" from the ground and see if that plant comes back.

You do know that all parts of your plant is highly toxic? Keep small children away from it.

Here is a link where you can read about it. It might be more helpful than I can or maybe one of our other readers might be raising them.

My MIL has carnations growing in her front flower garden. They are in the open with no shade and the plants have survived the triple digit heat.

I had Hollyhocks for several years and lost all of them when Hubby added on to our shed. I haven't had any for about 3 years and I planted some this year. They love full sun.

Trees and shrubs are a little slower coming out here than in WW, we are just far enough north to make it take abit longer. I did defintely lose at least one miniature rose bush this winter. Most of my stuff is coming up well. Funny thing, as cold as it is, my honeysuckle never loses its green color the whole winter. It has grown so much it has taken over three sides of a three sided fence. My lambs ears stay their normal color all winter, too, and are merrily growing now. My morning glories..

i spend a lot of time in the summer standing outside ambushing butteflies for pictures

Thank you... yes, much of the vine feels pliable to me... So I'm hoping when the ground warms up, they will grow new leaves... My MIL's Jessamine remained green all winter, though.

There's one vine by itself I can afford to experiment with. I might try cutting it back, like you suggested.

And toxic? Yes, as of a few days ago, I read that myself. When I bought them, and paid a goodly sum I might add, I was not told this and never gave it any thought whatsoever.

When I buy a plant that I pay quite a bit for, I order it from a mail order place that guarantees their plants for lifetime. So if you kill it or it just dies, you can just email them the order no. and they will send you another one. I just looked and still having the shipping slips on a set of tall phlox I bought three years ago. I got them from Springhill. I, unfortunately, threw away the shipping label and deleted the confirmation email on the set of roses that I got from them and lost one of. Well, you win some and you lose some.

Boy, would that ever save me some dollars.... This yard is just way too big to get filled up, especially when the plants don't take. I generally like to plant native vines and herbs, and just let them have their way... like out at Boiling Springs.... When I was younger, I grew lots of rosebushes, but finally got a bellyful of fighting the thorns... Get in the middle of 2 or 3 bushes, and those things will hold you hostage until help arrives.

I edited my last post to include that the mail order place I use is Springhill. That is funny about the roses. I have wild roses growing in front of my house. I once got locked out and was trying to crawl through my kitchen window to get in. I stood an ice chest on end and stood on it, which promptly fell over in the roses..I worked in the kitchen of a nursing home then and walked like one of the residents when I got to work that day.

I'm so glad you started this. I wish we could get a few more threads going on here for like some of the other towns have.
