Basic training

Well, looks like we'll be cutting our visit short here, and my daughter and I will actually be heading back to stay with my family until my husband gets done with his training in August. Anyway, we're staying until the 4th, but were wanting some fun stuff to do as a family on the weekends. What are some of your favorite things to do around here? And some of your favorite restaurants?

Thanks!

If you have kids, they might enjoy Geyser Falls in Philadelphia(Choctaw, Mississippi). It's about a 45 minute drive.

Take those kids fishing. Take them on a picnic and a day of fishing at Okatibbea Reservoir or a friendly neighborhood lake.

Find a nice stable and do some horseback riding, a little stroll down a quiet path around Bonita Lakes, throw in a movie and a pizza at CiCi's and the kids will be thrilled.

The museum has fun things for kids in summer as well as the Library, get them enrolled in the Little Theater kids events, help them set up a lemonade stand and give the money to poor kids.

Meridian has so much to do. This isn't a big city, this is a place to get in touch with your downhome side and teach kids what is important about being a family.

They're only going to be here for a couple of weeks. Not much sense signing her daughter up for much.

When was the last time you went bowling, Chicky? Or how about skating? Both nice air conditioned clean places across the street from one another.

I haven't been there in years, but what about Dunn's Falls? Swim (acutally wade or float on a plastic raft) in Chunky river (if it's not too high right now), play and splash on the falls themselves. There was and still may be a swimming pool (of sorts) near the admission entrance, and, particularly in the spring and fall, beautiful "woods" foilage down on the river. Before the steps were built down to the river and base of the falls, there used to be a simple dirt path. In going down the path or going back up it, you could even get to see a little bit of "nature" when an occasional snake or lizard crossed the dirt path.

Dunn's Falls used to be a free, popular Sunday evening fun trip, all it took to get there was enough gas in your car to not run out on the way there or back, or your old car didn't break down. That was before somebody took it over and "developed" it, built a replica of Stetson's old watermill factory on the falls, built a long flight of steps down to the river and base of the falls--but unfortunately, began charging an admission price.

You MUST take the kids to News Restaurant!! (It's on the list Sandra posted.) It is the ONLY place where you will EVER be able to get a "Double Good"!! Order "A Double Good- Dressed and an order of onion rings". Order it in EXACTLY those words. They will know exactly what you are talking about. That order alone may change your mind about leaving Meridian early.
Also try the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich served open faced. AND the veal cutletts (Get a half order unless you can REALLY eat!!)
Go for supper and check out the fancy menu. Going in you will think a dive like that won't get real fancy on the menu, but you will be surprised.
I have been eating there for over 50 years and the only thing that has changed is the wait staff. It's a great place to eat and the last of the old "Meridian Traditions".
