Anger over illegal immigrant crimes in wake of carjacking death

HOUSTON -- Surveillance video captured something unforgettable last week.

The images showed a carjacker attacking, stabbing and killing Tina Davila.

She was laid to rest Monday.

Police say the man responsible for Davila’s murder is 22-year-old Timoteo Rios.

On Monday, authorities confirmed that Rios was involved in a fourth carjacking over two days this month.

The last incident happened just hours after Davila was killed.

Investigators believe Rios is an illegal immigrant who may have fled to Mexico.

That news comes as no surprise to groups fighting illegal immigration.

Bob Price works with U.S. Borderwatch.

“This man spent 40 days in jail last year. Was identified as being an illegal alien. Somewhere there is a breakdown in the system,” he said.

It's a breakdown Price says must be fixed.

“As we see with Rios, he was in jail twice last year. If they gotten him out the first time, he wouldn’t have been there the second time,” he said.

Timoteo Rios has been charged with the murder of Tina Davila.

Rios served time last year in the Harris County Jail on misdemeanor charges related to drugs, criminal mischief and giving a false name.

At this time, it is still unclear why a detainer hold wasn’t placed on Rios.

ICE officials are looking into that, but it’s also raised the larger question.

Now many want to know if more needs to be done to track illegal immigrants who commit crimes.

Immigration attorney Harry Gee says hardened criminals should be priority one.

He says raids like the one at a Shipley’s donuts factory last week only target hard-working people.

“I think the utilization of those resources be refocused on criminal, smugglers and lawbreakers,” said Gee.

As more crimes involving illegal immigrants make headlines, law enforcement could face even more pressure on a divisive issue.

How is it "racist" to post the names and country of origin of criminals?

Just because they are not Irish, nor Chinese, nor Muslim does not change the fact that the newpaper reported on criminal activities from illegal aliens from Mexico doing crime in the US. No way to sugar coat who are causing the majority of the crimes...just read the names posted by the Cherokee County Sheriff and the JDP....man, there are sure a LOT of Hispanic sounding names in there....and if that is "racist", than it will just have to be "racist".

I think that is merely a politically correct way of white folks trying not to anger or somehow offend non white folks. And THAT seems racist to me....to pretend that folks are not whatever they just happen to be so that no one gets called attention to for whatever good or not good that they do.

Teen Kidnapped, Sexually Assaulted After School

SOUTH HOUSTON, Texas -- A teenager was kidnapped and sexually assaulted as she walked home from school, officials told KPRC Local 2 Tuesday.

South Houston police said a 17-year-old South Houston High School student was grabbed in the 3500 block of Shaver Street near Vista Road at about 2:30 p.m. on Monday.

Officials said she had just left school and was walking to a nearby fast-food restaurant when two men asked her what her name was and pulled her into their car. Police said she tried to avoid them.


The men took the teen behind a Food Town grocery store about a half-mile away. The passenger sexually assaulted her and then the men let her go, officials said. She walked home and her family called police.

The girl said the men, who were in their 30s to 40s, were driving an older-model white Toyota Camry with tan interior and a blue tree deodorizer hanging from the rearview mirror.

She said the driver is missing a front tooth and wore a tan baseball cap. The girl told investigators that the passenger was about 5 feet 9 inches tall and wore a light T-shirt and blue jeans.

Police said the men are Hispanic and spoke Spanish during the attack.

Pasadena Independent School District officials said they let parents know about the attack through an automated telephone message.

Extra security was also at the school to make sure students left safely.

"We're using this as a time to remind our students to be careful, to walk with a group, to not get so involved in their headphones," spokeswoman Candace Ahlfinger said. "The safety of our students is always our first concern. So our officers will also step up security. We monitor the area anyway. We always have a police officer on duty at the school."

Police recommended parents pick up their children from school or encourage them to walk home in groups.

Area residents said they would be more careful when out shopping.

"It is traumatizing because you can't be safe here anymore," Annabelle Espinoza said.

"When I get out of the house I have to look around," Nungh Vo said. "Life is really scary and dangerous."

Is Annabelle ESPINOZA...clearly Hispanic...racist for being frightened and talking about it to the reporter.

Is Nungh Vo , clearly of Asian descent, RACIST, for saying that life is scary...clearly her opinion after Hispanic race perpetrators committed this CRIME.

Frankly, I am sick and tired of everyone being called RACIST for telling it like it is. U.S.A. Whites, especially the men, are all called crackers and slave owners and held responsible for every single event that has ever oppressed anyone in the world, and THAT is what I would consider RACIST.

They are not the only ones committing crimes but they are ALL committing crimes just by being in this country.

For those who feel the need to point out that native-born citizens of
the US also wind up doing criminal acts, the answer is "yes", we have
enough problems with our home-grown criminals. We sure do not need
any additional ones who sneak across our borders from other
countries. They overload our police departments, jails, prisons, and
do economic crimes (robbing banks and homes), as well as killing

Those who, in knee-jerk fashion, shout "racist" are really just

US laws and "sovereignty" (soberania). It continues when they live
as a "hidden" community, not paying IRS taxes, using multiple
identities, conspiring to bring their friends and relatives in the
same way that they came here, and resorting to all sorts of
crime. It is a BIG problem, and one not easily solved. The roundups
are one way to try and get them to recognize that they don't belong
here, unless they come via the legal route. Getting serious about
cutting off social services would be another step to convince them
that they might be better off going "home", wherever that is --- and,
as George Bush has repeatedly said, "leave no child behind".

I could start posting California illegal crimes and you would see how much more will happen here if we close our eyes to it !!!

Based on a one-year in-depth study, a researcher estimates there are about 240,000 illegal immigrant sex offenders in the United States who have had an average of four victims each.
Deborah Schurman-Kauflin of the Violent Crimes Institute in Atlanta analyzed 1,500 cases from January 1999 through April 2006 that included serial rapes, serial murders, sexual homicides and child molestation committed by illegal immigrants.

She found that while the offenders were located in 36 states, most were in states with the highest numbers of illegal immigrants. California had the most offenders, followed by Texas, Arizona, New Jersey, New York and Florida.

Schurman-Kauflin concluded that, based on a figure of 12 million illegal immigrants and the fact that more of this population is male than average, sex offenders among illegals make up a higher percentage than offenders in the general population.

She arrives at the figure of 240,000 offenders – a conservative estimate, she says – through public records showing about 2 percent of illegals apprehended are sex offenders.

"This translates to 93 sex offenders and 12 serial sexual offenders coming across U.S. borders illegally per day," she says.

She points out the 1,500 offenders in her study had a total of 5,999 victims, and each sex offender averaged four victims.

"This places the estimate for victimization numbers around 960,000 for the 88 months examined in this study," she declares.

Schurman-Kauflin breaks down the 1,500 cases reviewed this way:


525, or 35 percent, were child molestations

358, or 24 percent, were rapes

617, or 41 percent, were sexual homicides and serial murders
Of the child molestations, 47 percent of the victims were Hispanic, 36 percent Caucasian, 8 percent Asian, 6 percent African American and 3 percent other nationalities.

In 82 percent of the cases, she noted, the victims were known to their attackers.

"In those instances, the illegal immigrants typically gained access to the victims after having worked as a day laborer at or near the victims' homes," she says. "Victims ranged in age from 1 year old to 13 years old, with the average age being 6."

In her examination of the sex-related homicides, Schurman-Kauflin found the most common method was for an offender to break into a residence and ambush his victims.

Not only were victims raped, she said, but some – 6 percent – were mutilated.

"The crime scenes were very bloody, expressing intense, angry perpetrator personalities," she said. "Specifically, most victims were blitzed, rendered incapable of fighting back, and then raped and murdered. The most common method of killing was bludgeoning, followed by stabbing."

She found it especially disturbing that in 22 percent of all sex crimes committed by illegal immigrants, victims with physical and mental disabilities were targeted.

The highest number of sex offenders, according to the study, came from Mexico. El Salvador was the original home to the next highest number. Other countries of origin included Brazil, China, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Russia, and Vietnam.

Nearly 63 percent of the offenders had been deported on another offense prior to the sex crime, the study showed. There was an average of three years of committing crimes such as DUI, assault or drug related offenses prior to being apprehended for a sexual offense.

In 81 percent of cases, offenders were drinking or using drugs prior to offending. Rapists and killers were more likely to use alcohol and drugs consistently than child molesters.

Only about 25 percent of offenders were found to have been stable within a community. In 31 percent of the crimes, the offenders entered into the communities where they offended within two months of the commission of their sex offenses.

But many, 79 percent, had been in the U.S. for more than one year before being arrested for a sex crime. They typically were known to the criminal justice system for prior, less serious offenses before they molested, raped or murdered, the study said.

Schurman-Kauflin concludes illegal immigrants gradually commit worse crimes and are continually released back into society or deported.

"Those who were deported simply returned illegally again," she says.

She points out that only 2 percent of the offenders in her study had no history of criminal behavior, beyond crossing the border illegally.

"There is a clear pattern of criminal escalation," she said.

These are not all just "poor folks trying to make enough money to get by"...

Mexican national had $1.2 million in cash at time of arrest

SEATTLE -- A 28-year-old Mexican national has been sentenced in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 13 years, four months in prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and heroin.

The U.S. attorney's office in Seattle says Javier Sanchez-Vasquez likely will be deported to Mexico following his prison term.

At the time of his arrest, Sanchez-Vasquez had $1.2 million in cash and, 26 kilos of heroin and cocaine.

As part of the plea agreement from January, Sanchez-Vasquez forfeits to the federal government more than $1.2 million in cash stashed in various homes and cars.

He was sentenced by Judge Ricardo Martinez on Friday.

Rusk Family Members Busted For Dealing Drugs

A grandfather and grandson drug dealing duo were taken into custody by Cherokee County Sheriff's Department officials Tuesday after executing a narcotics search warrant at a home near Reklaw.

Deputies served a search warrant at 74-year-old Finus Sturns' residence west of Reklaw around 2:30 p.m. and found a little more than an ounce of suspected crack cocaine, less than two ounces of marijuana and $3,000 cash. Sturns' grandson, Ricardo Pereles Jr., 33, also of Reklaw, was taken into custody after a brief attempt to run and dispose of the crack, White said. Two investigators ran him down and most of the evidence was recovered, White said.

Sturns and Pereles have been arraigned. Sturns has been charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, while Pereles faces numerous charges including manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and evading arrest. Sturns and Pereles remain in Cherokee County Jail on $25,000 and $50,000 bonds, respectively.
