have any of you been to the library lately?? they are now planting new tree's. they couldn't wait to cut down the beautiful tree's. now they are planting ugly tree's. evergreens. evergreens look great planted in the right area, but the space in front of the library isn't it.

i went to the library to use their computor, because my printer isn't working. i got there about 3:30 pm. in the time i was there 30 minutes. i had to listen to screaming kids, in the adult section, kids jumping off the chairs, kids running around, kids tossing books all over the floor. a mother sat her daughter down at one of the computors, and turned the little one loose, while she went around the corner to another computor. all three had sonic drinks. the little one proceeded to dump he drink all over the floor by the computor missing the key board by inch's. the mother did clean up the mess half assed. the library workers were by the desk visiting, i know they couldn't be deaf. they didn't even look around to see where the noise was coming from. so i guess in todays world it is acceptable to make as much noise as you want,, or to do whatever you want in a library.so if you want peace and quiet, so you can read, study or do research the woodward library is not the place to be.

i did figure out why the drinks were acceptable,, two of the workers had drinks also.whats next??? stopping by the fast food place, and bringing your kids to the library, and having your supper on one of the tables, while your kids do their homework.i was suprised that the mother and her two kids didn't have hamburgers and fries with those drinks.

Doesn't sound like much has changed. Smiler

I believe it has been probably 20 years since I tried to use the Woodward library... and this is exactly why.

I'm a book freak, and I "used" to love to hang out in libraries, and breathe in the heavenly scent of all those books... I enjoy researching various subjects, and especially used to enjoy finding articles in those huge volumes of old magazines.

Now one is better off to use the Internet IMO, for that reason and for other dire changes I noticed some years ago. Sadly, computer screens are harder on the eyes, and we will probably evolve into blind squinty-eyed creatures that avoid light.

I don't know if the Woodward library has put everything on computer or not, but one of the college libraries I used to do research in, basically went hi-tech, and did away with a lot of the reference books and mags... Instead, you had to stand in line for a computer to pull up the article. And then after standing in line for quite some time, you'd sit down and pull up the article, only to get a message that the entire article had not been loaded into the system.

And I don't understand why children are allowed to treat "sacred" areas like playgrounds, and, libraries ARE sacred... or at least they used to be.

Smiler

When Wilmar and I were in Woodward and almost got lynched, several months prior to the cross burning. We used the library for our internet connection so that we would not miss out on any abuse from the forumers.
It was much as y'all stated. People noisy and rude, food and drinks everywhere, and children just running amok.
The thing that I thought was oddest was their policy of how you got onto the computer. All a person had to do was write their name on a piece of paper and they were given a marker that showed them checked out on a piece of paper. They advised us of a time limit, but never enforced it and we could just basically surf all we wanted.
Here, you have to leave your drivers license at the desk when you are on a computer. You are only allowed thirty minutes, but at the end of that time, you can re-check the computer out if no one needs it. You may not receive your d.l. back until after computer is checked to make sure it is alright.
I notice that it seems to be a trend everywhere that people feel it is alright to take their soft drinks and food inside where ever they go. It is like they can't live without sucking on something to drink for a few minutes.
At the Hutch Juco, in the BOA building, I am doing some contract cleaning for a few months. Outside the door of the computer lab is a sign that says, "ABSOLUTELY, no drinks in the computer lab." The trash can in the back of the room is always full of drink cups and cans. It seems they all try carrying them in there and then the teacher must have to carry the trashcan around to pick them up.
I also notice when you go in business places, that employees seem to see no problem with eating while waiting on clients/customers. What about the employee who takes lunch at their desk but doesn't intend on waiting on anyone? They don't put up a closed sign of anything that let's you know they are never going to wait on you. You just cool your heels while they eat and talk on the phone and ignore you. Once again, customer service, my old song has been played upon an out of tune piano and butchered beyond belief.
When has it become appropriate to be munching down on snacks or meals, and chomping while talking to the person you are waiting on? I remember when it was considered rude just to chew gum while taking care of a customer. Now, people seem to be running some kind of smorgasbord while taking care of others.
I am not entirely sure that the more casual relaxed workplace has done us a world of good.

I politely disagree. I think the atomospere at the library is very friendly. I like that there isn't a librarian getting onto you everytime you turn around. What do expect going in to the library when the kids get out of school at 3 are you smoking crack to think that it will dead silent with kids running around and they have just as much right as adults do in the library so if you want peace and quit stay home!!! or go to a universty library a public library is for everyone! even mothers with young childern what a concept Smiler

Shanesgirl: I respecfully disagree too. I do expect children with their moms in the library. But I expect them to be respecful and reading or being read too. After all it is a library. I do not expect them to be running around and being noisy, that is for the playground. They need to learn to respect others around them, it will be good for them.

Shanesgirl, it is fine to respectfully disagree. You have your right to your opinion. Yes, the library is for everyone. I do remember raising children to sit down and be quiet in public areas, too. Also, asking a question like are you smoking crack is not respectful, it is merely disagreeable. Just because children are young is not a license for them to run amok and disturb other people. I bet at school they aren't allowed to act like that in the library, well maybe they are, at least in days past they weren't.
JMO while not smoking crack.

This is a fine example of why children are growing more and more disrespectful to other humans in general, and most especially to anyone more than a year or two older than them.

You can call me Mrs. Freethinker from now on, and please don't think your insults about smoking crack bother me at all... Kids calling me a b*tch don't bother me either... Cool

most kids act likethat because they know thier parents will not spank them inpublic for fear that they will get turned into DHS for child abuse. I got dirty looks at wal-mart the other day for spanking my 4yold grand-daughter It just took one swat on the butt, I will not have her running up and down the isles or crawling on the floor. People need to take back some controll of thier kids.

Listen I'm all for making kids respect the library and all that jazz and even getting on to them. I'm just saying that it's not going to be completely silent, and that is at any library. They're making them more family friendly for a safe place for kids to be. and if they (the librarians) were tyrants kids would be running on the streets. I think it's a good thing to see kids at a place they can learn something and be safe. If you wanted to go at a quiter time try going in the mornings before the kids get out of school. That was the point I was trying to make.

I want to know why you people don't approach the administrator of the library with your concerns instead of ranting on a forum. That is the only way you can make a change. Bashing the library and it's employee's and the people with children will do nothing, I guess it might make you feel better for a moment, and tick a few people off, but it will not change anything!

And yelling at us, made a lot of change, too. The purpose of a forum is to discuss things, which is what was being done.
And this is mageepet, I was on Wilmar's computer, and didn't realize she was logged in.

Obviously you old pros only want to here your point of view. I was just making a statement that if you want a change at the library do something about it, but obviously you just need to rant and really don't care, so that is fine.
