Nothing that the current administration does surprises me anymore.... The next 4 yrs. will indeed be a challenge because Obama will have to try to undo all the messes created by Bush & his cronies. |

This is not as difficult to sort out as it might seem.
The new top guy who Obama sends in - simply assigns the old politicals (who have recently burrowed in as permanent civil servants) over to Iraq and Afghanistan to assist those governments with "Nation Building". If they don't get it, he can assign them to northern Pakistan. They won't last 5 minutes. |

The practice of placing political appointees into permanent civil service posts before an administration ends is not new. In its last 12 months, the Clinton administration approved 47 such moves, including seven at the senior executive level. Federal employees with civil service status receive job protections that make it very difficult for managers to remove them.
Go cry a river some where else, it has been done before by democrats. |

A friend of mine had one of those former politicals (republican who had burrowed in) hiding out in a tiny room about the size of a closet in the back of his office for several years. The guy had nothing to do but sleep all day.
A bunch of them also get assigned to Think Tanks" like RAND, who have their own budgets and can pretty much do whatever they please. |

This whole discussion is nothing more than the same old "We are good because we are democratc and you are bad because you are republican or vice versa." BS.
No mention was made as to whether these people were incompetent or brilliant. Typical political BS. Isn't partisan politics a wonderful thing? |

---- Good point! There is also a concern or in some cases bit of disgust about "political appointees" (people who donate large amounts of money for campaigns from either party) thwarting the rules and procedures of the civil service system in order to get themselves a permanent job. As the trend continues over many years, its no wonder the size of Government grows and it becomes less and less effective. This is a particularly obnoxious practice since it is very common for the politicals that burrow in the administration at a senior level of Government to do everything in their power to sabatoge the policies and initiatives of the new administration. So a highly competent individual placed in a high level position who is disrupting team work and progress is not good -- unless the goal is to have a Government that is incapable of getting anything done. Disruptive partisan politics should not be deliberately inflicted on a brand new leadership team that was elected by the people. There are many other forums where partisan politics can be played out without attempting to paralyze those that are trying to Govern. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Joe Schantz, |

Ah, but as was said before there are two solutions. Reassignment or more effective, a direct order that this is the way this department will go and termination for insubordination if it doesn't go that way.

---------- Red, Thats the way it should work. Unfortunately trying to fire a civil servant takes about 3 to 4 years. By that time they're hoping the other party gets back in and sees them as the heros. Its not pretty no matter how you slice it. ------------ |
