RE: http://www.tribune-democrat.com/local/local_story_322225921.html
Yoy can not cut the public works department anymore than it is. Losing the superintendents position jepordizes the loss of revenue and services to the city residents. The publice works department has lost 22 employees since 2001 with NO replacements. We know that people sometimes get frustrated when there calls go unanswered for a couple of days, but with the loss of manpower this is sometimes how long it takes. This year the department has lost 5 truck drivers, experienced truck drivers and is losing another in January. Now that is 6. If you take the Superintendent and lay him off, you are losing another. This a WORKING superintendent who does everything that the union will allow him to do. This year alone he has brought over $160,000.00 into the ccity coffers. Losing him will lead and to a drop in income. CDBG grant money will be cut, which this includes sidewalk raplacement, storm sewer repair/replacement, etc. This will leave very few employees on the road when it snows this winter due to the loss of the retirees and the superintendent. Last Thanksgiving when union people were unavailable he was out for 15 hours to make sure that roads for the most part were passable. He needs your support to help him and keep bringing money into the city so taxes wont be raised. If you keep listening to Jack Williams and his propaganda that he is pushing on everyone there will be no employees left in the city, which includes Jack wanting to cut more positions that deal with housing improvement and assistance. This was at Thursday afternoon Budget meeting. There is money than was available in other departments to fund this position. When Jack brought this scenario up to take $20,000.00 that was extra in the parking bureau and give to another dept. Jack shut his mouth and said no, forget I even said it. If people think that Jack is helping the city, you are sadly mistaking. Remember this is an idividual who is on a city pension and has his benefits paid until the day he dies. And yes he still is eligible for medicare. Instead of cutting the superintendents position and taking 6 people off the road this winter, maybe Jack should look at how we can bring business and industry in town and not worry about putting people on unemployment while he is set in his city pension and benefits for life. City residents need to start attending these meetings and have a say so on the services that you deserve. I ask again that the city council to but Mr. Britton position back in the budget, he is an assest and a plus to the public works department. Call the city manager and the city councilman. |

Beat me to it April.
On the other hand, I think I'd keep the Super over the Director. |

I need to add that the name is appropriate for the person "NO the truth"! It's time for a reality check in the area of employment in the city. For years this person, which is so great has been taking advantage of his position to serve those he knows. Call the city manager and councilmen/woman, why? When the city manager fails to recognize that his lack of direction in budget issues has caused the financial deficit the past few years, it is time to call him only for his resignation. Why do people feel the need to "defend" those that they are friends with without evaluating the situation from afar? Mr./Mrs. NO the truth, sit down and write a list of pros and cons for each person in the city - you may change your thoughts. Again, this is only my opinion. It's time to start new from scratch ... start on the top and work your way down. Schit rolls downhill, so start at the top! |

I wonder if Ow! My Back! Jack can drive a plow?
How many public works employees are there? What do they do when it doesn't snow? |
|||

Old Pro |
They go for breakfast .. then lunch ... oh that's right, there's a pothole on Main Street. Oops, wrong department.
Sorry Guess, didn't mean to cut on your post, but anyone can learn how to drive a snowplow. |

I think you made my point. It would make sense to operate public works with seasonal per diem employees when the snow flies supplementing the bare minimum necessary employees for the rest of the year.
A director and a superintendent? A city manager and a finance director? Please. |

Maybe if this guy would work instead of loafing at various spot throught out the city and going to school, his position might have been justified. From his speach to council the other night, you'd think he was gods-gift-to-the-city. If he does all he said, what does the director and the others do. The city needs police personnel on the street before the this guy, only hope he not one of the cops on the street. If he off the job, it probably gives him more time to harass his formenr ladies. Sure wish davis would tell him to turn in his yellow truck instead of letting it parked on edgewood ave. Maybe the only guy on council with the $#*^& to speak up could use it to help plow, he attempts to correct things, i'm sure he could handle this, at least better than super-supervisor. Try a new line of work britton, the city doesn't need you, and no one is going to call your buddy curt of uncle bill to help. |

Yes, anyone probably can. But don't sell that job short. There is far more to it than you may think. |

You got that right, redcap

Redcap, I appreciate your comment but have to say that in the Winter there is an abundance of males with snowplows and big trucks out there looking for employment. Being a female, you are right, I don't know the “challenges of snowplowing†but if I can learn to use a backhoe and other heavy machinery, surely one could "acquire" the skill of snow-plowing.
Perhaps this is a future book in the making for those that may loose their source of employment. |

Like former Steeler coach has be quoted "Its time to get on with you lifes work" This applies to the soon to be unempployeed ex-superintendent. Many in our area have been victims of cut backs, layoffs and business closings. What makes city employees think they are an exception. I have always been a strong union suppoerter, but city tax payer should not be expected to do with less in thier households, only to see the city and some employees wine and cry when the must go because of poor management, and just the plain lack of money to keep certain employees working. If the remaining employee can't handle the assignments with the manpower available, it might be time that council consider contracting for snow plowing and other work if the city employees feel over worked or dissatified. Where was the union when they contracted out grass cutting? Those who are left to work for the city should be appreciated for their efforts, and those that aren't happy should look at other employment out side of city jobs. Council should spend what the have, and not any more. We tax payers do, and have no choice in doing otherwise. Maybe this supervisor can then attend school full time, and not while on the city payroll, and then become better qualified for a job, that he will no longer be required to leave to attend school. Just make sure he gives back the truck, or will the manager let him use it as a going away gift. Wouldn't surprise me with how he manages our money. |

Karen, I said you were right that anyone could probably learn to run a snowplow. I just said there is a lot more to it than most realize.
Biggest problem for any snowplow driver is the lack of visability. Added to that is the the snow simply does not cooperate it falls both on the road and the neighboring lawn etc. It can get mighty har to tell where the roadway is when all you have is the totally right of way as a white blanket. Finally the most dangerous and aggravating thing for a snowplow driver. Thos that should be home making out with their spouses coming out of the bars to be in the way. I could tell a lot of stories but I have vented enough. |

Get rid of the darn worhtless dog catching position and the assistant city manager entirely before looking into police and fire. Police is spread thinner than people know. For example when the police are potrolling a contracted area, the projects etc. the criminals are out and about doing their business right here in the city. As far as fire we still have the same amount of properties to defend and we definatley can not afford to lose even 1 fireman. Why is the City manager not looking at cutting those around his "inner circle"? How about an answer Curt? I can't believe that the proposed cuts came up so quickly. What did Davis do pull names from a hat? Start thinking City hall instead of pulling hairbrained ideas from hats!!
