The Chamber to the rescue again! Thank goodness we're finally getting someone in there that can teach the kids something. Those professional teachers at HISD are clearly wasting time trying to teach history and geography. We need more people like auto dealer Pat Camfield deciding what students need to learn, when they need to learn it, and then teaching it to them in our public schools. No group is better equipped to decide what's best for every aspect of Walker County than the Chamber of Commerce. That's for sure.

I see your point.

In fairness, though, I did read the article and conclude that the messages these volunteers were sharing with students were good ones. We live in an area where small business is the lifeblood of our society yet, in America, the overwhelming majority of small businesses fail. We don't need more help from the government, just good advice from successful people. I think there is a wealth of knowledge that successful business people can share with our youth.

I feel there are many opportunities within the community for the Chamber of Commerce to do positive things, and I think that instead of bashing them for everything they do, we should applaud them when they do things other than promote political agendas, give each other awards, and hold fundraisers for themselves.

The Chamber needs to grow beyond an honorary panel of well-to-dos and realtors whining at the government about not having enough $100 thousand homes to sell. To that end, I think they could use our encouragement.

"We live in an area where small business is the lifeblood of our society..."

Where do you live? I live in Huntsville. TDCJ and SHSU are the "lifeblood" here.

There is a difference between having a job and being a business person. Many people in this community who "have jobs" work at SHSU and TDCJ. Many of these people also live outside the city or on tax-exempt property.

The huge majority of business people in this town own a small business, and those people live in and pay taxes in the city. As a resident here, I understand the vital importance of the college and the prison, but I do not underestimate the huge importance of everybody else.

According to the Huntsville Horizon Plan, in 2004 over 46% of non-farm employment in Walker county was in Government. I don't think we would look much different from New Waverly or Riverside without SHSU and TDCJ. That's all I meant.
