I am starting a new thread to discuss the various meetings that are held in Greensburg and Decatur County. This would include but is not limited to common council meetings, commissioner meetings, APC meetings, school board meetings, etc.

quote:

“That means the average salary is around $14 an hour. That’s pathetic, really,” Tebbe stated.

The quote above was wrong, and I have retracted my comments. Mr. Tebbe stated $14,000 a year was pathetic. Thanks to Jim-B for the correction.

As we play alphabet soup with the 2007 city council candidates, starting with T for Tebbe we continue to U, V, W, – wait, W…can everyone say William Wenning…

Here are the links to the GDN and WTRE reports of the meeting, and the actual minutes of the meeting:

For those that attended the council meeting, aren't the official minutes very clean this month? How many people feel the minutes actually reflect the spirit and content of the meeting? Without the GDN and WTRE reports most citizens would not know what actually transpired at the meeting.

In conclusion, did anyone else notice that the reporters lost their press box? The reporters used to sit behind Ryle, Bower, Tebbe and Dornich. At the last meeting, they were sitting in the audience. I overheard one of the reporters jokingly comment that they may have lost their press box because they could overhear Bower, Tebbe and Dornich whispering during the meetings. Not sure that is a joke, it may be the truth.

The council members were also playing musical chairs, as Dornich, who normally sits next to Tebbe at the far side of the room moved over and sat next to Gardner at the last meeting. I think I would be distancing myself from Tebbe too...

Let's see if the reporters get their press box back at the next meeting...

Most interesting. Having not attended the meeting, I wondered if they were two different meetings! Roll Eyes

Subj: City Council Meeting

If I am reading this properly the original Tax abatement was given to Holiday Inn partially based on they would employ 43 people.

Didn't this raise a RED FLAG, I have no expertise in motel management but doesn't 43 employees in a small motel sound excessive?

I hope someone questioned that figure. Wouldn't it have been logical to ask for a breakdown of positions?

O, I will be looking for you at the next Council meeting. You will be the blond Right?

Don, I can't find any minutes for the Tax Abatement board or whatever it is called, so it is hard to tell what went on when the abatement was originally approved for the Holiday Inn.

I think Gary Herbert is involved with abatements, maybe he can direct us to the minutes.

So, what is the process anyway? How are they obtained? What do they look at for renewal?

When is the next meeting?

Don P.-- You are correct about Holiday Inn's original abatement being based on them having 43 employees. What would that many people do in such a small place? Recently, within the last month or so,there was a meeting of whoever does the abatements and this was discussed. The story was in the GDN the next day.
My mother lives in the apartments on Freeland Road that were formerly owned by Dale Crites. When he couldn't get a tax abatement for them anymore, he sold the complex to Northgate Apartments.
Seems to me, the abatements are used to peoples' advantage and then just dump the property and move on the next abatement opportunity.

I thought my day couldn't possibly get any worse, but now this happens.
As much as it pains me, I guess I have to stick up for Tebbe on this one. I thought of this when the article originally ran, but thought nothing more of it until now.
I'm certain that this was a mis-statement by the paper.
What I heard Tebbe say was $14K per year, not $14 per hour. And that being the case, I'd have to agree that it isn't exactly living large money.
Grrrrrrr to the GDN for making me defend him, but I felt I ought to when I'm 99% certain that he was mis-quoted.

I would guess that most workers at a motel are not full time

You are an honorable man Jim.

You are correct, Mr. Tebbe stated $14,000 a year. I have retracted my statement and offer my apology.

Here is a link to his actual statement (it is in MP3 format, you will need a program that plays MP3's on your computer). Sorry about the sound quality but I am just learning...

Maybe Mr. Tebbe needs to check what the ladies that are caring for our children at local day cares are making per year. They give so much to those children for very little money.
It's true the wages for the workers are dependent upon the profit of the day care, but in order to make more profit, more has to be charged for the care of the child. That's when the parents b---- and moan about the high cost of day care without giving regard to how well their child is being cared for and how much love and support the child receives in their absence.

There are still a lot of jobs out there that are in the lower end of the wage scale. For some $14 an hour would be a blessing not a curse. I think that all of our office holders need to remember that voters come from all economic backgrounds.

Updated meeting calendar.

It is almost a full time job keeping up with the changes in the APC meetings which are being made (so I am told) to avoid conflicts with some important peoples social schedules.

The week ahead, Board of Zoning Appeals on Tuesday and TIF (Redevelopment) on Thursday, and BOW on Friday at 8:00 a.m. so no working people can attend.

Who is going to get the BOW changed to 1/2 hour before or after the city council meeting so the public can attend?

It should be illegal to have public meetings during normal working hours.
