I would like for some of you well informed people to tell me about some of the candidates running for office, any of them. Talk to me like we are just sitting in the backyard having a glass of tea. Tell me how (in your own words) you think these candidates will effect my life in general. I just want simple, small talk and opinions. Ashamedly, I do not take the time to follow all the news and I know there are alot of people just like me out here. I want to vote for the candidates that are looking out for the little guys. For alot of us, the "big picture" is overwhelming and I know that there are a lot of you very well informed individuals with a ton of information. Break it down for me and please do not make it a debate amongst yourselves, there are other discussions already doing that.

Oh joy, this shall be a fun time! Vote for Obama and... -Taxes will go up. For everyone. Rich, poor, and in between. Any statement of the otherwise is just as bad as Bush Sr. -The US will look so Socialist Putin will be green with envy. Looking up "welfare state" will simply say "see also United States of America." -Cheap gas? Forget about it. you may get a free tire gauge to make sure you're inflated right. -Some world leader give us a problem, maybe kill a bunch of citizens. He'll talk us out of that bad spot in a jiffy, honestly. -That health insurance that you like, your favorite doctor? Nope, sorry, the government will be taking care of that... -Looking out for the little guys? Sorry, every one is created equal, some are just more equal than others. McCain... -Wishy washy on the war, but not afraid to stand up to someone when we need to. Generally wishy washy on a lot, but viewing the alternatives, the lesser of two evils. If that seems one sided, it kinda was meant to be, but at least I was honest in stating my opinions. /Where's Ross Perot when you need 'em? Lets start locally. I believe it time for a change in our local county offices. The office with the most impact on taxpayers is the county commissioners. First , keep party affiliation out of the picture when you are talking local elections. The responsibility of local representatives is to provide local services, and maintain roads.Forget what there "national party" stands for. There are 2 contested races for commissioner this election. Incumbent Charles Buell, and incumbent John Richards. David Best is running against Richards, and Rick Nobbe is running against Buell. I personally know all of these people, and they are as good of people to give their time to run for office, as anyone could ask for. J. Richards has done a lot in the southern end of the county for sanitation in the town of Alert. But it took a contested election to get him off his rear! John Richards gets a C from me. My vote will go to David Best. As a past school board member, Farmer, and owner of David Best Equipment, Dave has a great fiscal record, and good understanding of property taxes and there effects on local citizens. Charles Buell retired from Milestone contracotrs and is very knowledgeable about road building and construction, but I noticed Charly passed the buck during Honda's construction. There were very large quantities of stone hauled within the county road system, and the county road supt., who is incompetent in my estimation, was, for lack of another word,,trying to extort road repair from contractors using local quarries ,and from the quarries themselves. Everything should be done to help existing business exist, as well as new business build. Not penalizing those businesses ! Charly gets a C- from me. Rick Nobbe has been a manager of a local farm store, has been on the Greensburg School board ,and just an all around good guy. I have known Rick for years and gurantee he will not put up with incompetence and will listen to all . Rick Nobbe gets my vote! |

Jeff, let me try to break this down into simple terms so an arrogant, conceited donkey butt like yourself can understand:
1. (Emphasis by jj) oh!my! stated: "I just want simple, small talk and opinions." Willy stated his opinion, it is up to oh!my! to decide if they want to believe, discount or accept it. 2. (Emphasis by jj) oh!my! stated: "please do not make it a debate amongst yourselves, there are other discussions already doing that." Most likely oh!my! meant there are other threads already doing that. In any event, why not try honoring the request of the individual that started the thread. 3. (Emphasis by Jeff Martin) Jeff Martin stated: "This is your chance to clarify your positions." followed by several questions starting with "Why. News flash, this is not high school, you are not a teacher, nor are you Willy's employers, so Willy does not owe you any clarification. Get over yourself or has life been just as tough after high school as it was during high school. If you are capable, write a simple paragraph or a few lines explaining in simple terms, in your own words (without cutting and pasting), how you think your candidate will effect oh!my!'s life, my life in general, and how you feel your candidate will look out for the little guys (lower and middle class working people). If you are not capable (and I am dubious that you are), why don't you go back to your Bush and McCain bashing threads and give other rational people the opportunity to sit in the backyard, enjoy some tea and chat with oh!my!. oh!my!: I agree with many of the points made by member_of_mgmt and MrWilly. Barack Hussein Obama has a funny name, he does not look like the other presidents on the dollar bill (a paraphrase of his own words), he has one of the most liberal voting records of any elected junior senator, and he is an elitist. He belongs to a church that has a hate filled leader, who he finally broke ties with after they damaged his campaign. He attended the University of Hawaii, Columbia University, and Harvard. He attended these schools although he likes to mention his father, who lived in Kenya, was a Muslim that herded goats and was an alleged domestic servant to the British, while his mother worked on a bomber assembly line. Wonder how he paid for college, hence the silver spoon. Barack is a lawyer, and his rise to political power was in corrupt Chicago. He has never been in the military, so he has no military leadership experience. He voted "present" 130 times while in the Illinois senate, failing to take a stand on important issues. He is applying for a job where he will not be able to vote "present". With his "no vote" record, it is hard to decide where he stands on many issues. According to votesmart.org NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood has given Obama 100% approval ratings, while several Prolife groups have given him 0% approval ratings. The National Taxpayers Union gave Obama an "F" in 2007. McCain has some issues. He age is an issue, and he has failed to make his position on Iraq crystal clear. He has military experience, and was a POW in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" for several years. He was offered early release from the "Hanoi Hilton" but declined feeling that was not fair to the other POW's. In other words, he is a war HERO. He has served his country in the Senate being first elected in 1986 and last elected in 2004. He is a Republican, and a Senior Senator. NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood has given McCain a 0% rating, while Prolife groups have given McCain ratings above 75%. The National Taxpayers Union gave McCain an 80% rating in 2006. In my singular opinion, I would suggest voting for McCain. Here is a link to Project Vote Smart where you can do more research on the candidates. It contains their voting records, special interest groups ratings and other unbiased information to help you make an informed decision: McCain Obama |

Since Pigskinner brought up the County Commissioners, let me set the record straight, I have been at these meetings and I KNOW the FACTS.
1. John Richards has been working on the sewer problems of southern Decatur County LONG before he had an opponent. For Pigskinner to assert otherwise is either uninformed or an attempt to misrepresent the record of Mr. Richards. As for being someone who takes his position seriously, you cannot find a more dedicated D3 Commissioner than John Richards. Mr. Richards averages one meeting per day on behalf of Decatur County. Mr. Best could not even manage to take his yard signs down after the fair until 3 weeks later. Mr. Richards had his down the next day. 2. As for your assertion that Mr. Buell was deliberately trying to export jobs from Decatur County is again, either uninformed or a blatent misrepresentation of the facts. Mr. Buell not only has the local quarries and dump truck drivers to worry about, he has the taxpayers of the entire County to worry about. In the instance that Pigskinner is refering to, the dump truck drivers that were hauling stone into Honda were destroying some of our County Roads hauling stone from the quarries and into Honda. In a effort to ease the burden, and destruction, of specific County Roads, the Highway Super was instructed by the Commissioners to work with Global Performance and their contractors to find a workable soloution. By working together, Global the contractors and the Highway Dept. worked out a rotation schedule for certain County Roads in an effort to save specific roads from destruction. Yes, there were bumps in the road in crafting this plan, but in the end, it worked quite well for the taxpayers of Decatur County. Now, to be fair, this did cause some stone to be purchased from out of the County until the plan was hammered out and the Dump Truck Drivers had to drive a few extra miles on certain days, which did add a bit to their drive time and fuel costs, so from Pigskinners point of view, being one of those Dump Truck drivers, this was not a perfect soloution, but for the taxpayer of Decatur County who must pay for the road repairs, this was a fair soloution to the problems. Charlie happens to be one of the most dedicated Commissioners that this community has ever had. He is at the Courthouse nearly every single day making certain that things are running smoothly and watching out for your taxpayer dollars. I ran against Charlie in the May primary and I can tell you first hand, Charlie is one of the most honorable politicians you will ever meet. Although we were opponents, Charlie and I remained friends and spoke often. In fact, there were even occassions when either of us could be seen placing the others' yard signs in yards and places of public domain along with our own. Speaking of yard signs, Mr. Nobbe also failed to collect his yard signs following the fair and were left out for several weeks following the fair while Mr. Buell had his down the next morning following the fair. To be fair, I have not been to the past 2 Commissioner meetings, but as of the first meeting in July, neither Mr. Best nor Mr. Nobbe had attended ANY Commissioner meetings. As someone who has been a candidate for the office of Commissioner, I find it very telling that the two challengers have not found it important to attend the very meetings of the postitions that they seek. I must raise the question, "How serious are they about holding the highest office in the County if they do not even make the time to attend two meetings a month?". How can these candidates even hope to know what issues face our community if they do not attend the meetings? How can they lead our community when they do not know how to lead our community? Don't give me this bunk about "they don't want to pick up bad habbits from the currtent administration", the County Commissioner position is the highest elected position in County Government, there is a lot to know, there are literally thousands of issues that these three people deal with on a regular basis and in my opinion it is fool-hearted to run for an office of this responsibility without having a clue as to what you are getting yourself into. I have personally been a fairly regular face at Commissioner meetings for several years and I can tell you first hand, this is not a position to be taken lightly or a postion that one can walk into cold. Again, I must ask the question, "How serious are these two candidates if they do not even show up for the meetings of the office that they seek?" Yes, I am a Republican, however you cannot find two more dedicated, honorable and qualified candidates for County Commissioner than Charles Buell and John Richards. This statement coming from Charlie's May primary opponent should speak volumes and I encourage you to take the Commissioner races seriously and to please give Mr. Buell and Mr. Richards your consideration and your votes. |

The decision to harrass Global and its subcontractor's affected no one but the owners of the quarry. My trucks just went to a quarry in a different county. The commissioner's should have never went to Global performance to begin with! Global had a bid ,and wanted the work done. The Sub- contractors could buy their stone where ever they wanted, and it is cheaper close to home, so it obvious where the closet quarry is. You talk about owners of construction companies coming unglued! When the sub-contractors have all the quarries in 50 mile radius working to capacity and the closet one becomes unusable due to nothing more than road supt. complaining about the shape of the road. The commissioner's should have taken control of this ,and since the commissioners buck stops at their door ,they are the ones who have to answer for this. Globals point of view was ,hey, this county road supt. is making us look bad in the public eye ,and wants us to help pay for the roads. Global told Milestone and Poindexter that they will not accept any stone from Harris City, period. It took the owners of the quarry, and some irate citizens to get this straightened out. The county in general had no idea the size and scope of the Honda construction. And it went all the way from Mayor Frank and rural water, to the commissioners. Instead of doing what is best for the county and city business's ,they fought it out with local citizens. Global performance could care less where their stone and water came from, they wanted their job done. The county commissoner's should have directed the road supt. to keep the roads in repair and nothing else. The road is still the same 1 year later, as it was 1 years before Honda. Once again, the commisioners should use their power to help, not hurt, business ,which in turn, helps all citizens whos jobs and lifestyle are affected by those decisions. Being a commissioner does not give you authority to decide what day, and how many trucks will come and go from any business. Vote for Dave Best and Rick Nobbe. |

Jeff, before you go on the high and mighty defense against willy, I'll at least defend my words...
1. Taxes will go up. For everyone. Rich, poor, and in between. Any statement of the otherwise is just as bad as Bush Sr. You know all of this ideas and changes Barack wants to impose? How do you think he is going to pay for all of that? Money, as they say, does not grow on trees. 2. The U.S. will look so socialist that Putin will be green with envy. Look up "welfare state" and it will simply state "see also United States of America." Look at the Democrats actions as of late. Shutting down the House by circumventing parliamentary procedures and snubbing the Republicans, who only wanted to speak the allowed time they had. Look at all the new programs that Obama wants that will only further ensure that people will not have to take personal responsibility for their actions. 3. Cheap gas? Forget about it. You may get a free tire gauge to make sure you're inflated right. The Democrats want to tax big oil's profits. Do you think, that if a business is going to take a huge hit on their profits that they will stay in business long or keep prices low? Heck, 40-50 cents of the gallon price you pay today alone is taxes. And let me clue you in on something, as an operator of a gas station (I won't give location or company, but I'd swear before any judge that I do indeed operate one). I loose money, every period, on gasoline sales. I make money by selling soda and chips and so on. 4. Some world leader may give us a problem, maybe even kill a bunch of citizens. He'll talk us out of that bad spot in a jiffy. Honestly! Obama wants to talk to the leader of Iran? The same nutjob that denies the holocaust, that has threatened to wipe Israel of the map? So what if he did do just that? Should we talk to him, try and somehow reason with him? Or take him out? 5. That health insurance that you like, and your favorite doctor? Nope, sorry, the government will be taking care of that. National healthcare, with a Democrat president and Congress will be a reality. Look at all the good it has done for England and Canada. i suggest you get some books on dentistry, as the Brits have been resorting to taking their own teeth out since dentists are starting to not accept the national health care plan (you want sources, I'll find em, not enough time to do so now). 6. Looking out for the little guys? Sorry, every one is created equal, but some are just more equal than others. I'll put it this way. Democratic standard operating procedure is to look out for themselves first, then their friends, and everyone else last. I'd go on and argue some more points, but with respect to the rules that oh!my! laid out (and that you yourself have violated multiple times in order to try and prove your point), I won't. /Still wish Sen. Thompson was in the race. Gosh, where do I start with this???
First, this was not a decision to "harrass" Glabal, there was an issue with the subcontractors that was not being taken care of by the subcontractors (Milestone/Poindexter and the Dump Truck drivers), so the Commissioners went to the root, Global to let them know that there was a problem. Second, the quarry was not the only one affected by this decision, the 24,000 residents/taxpayers of Decatur County were also affected by this move by the Commissioners.
This is true, Global just wanted to work done, however since it was their job and the subs were under their command, when the subs were causing a problem, Global came into play to help solve the problem. Yes, it is true that the closest quarry is Harris City and it really bites that because of the carelessness of the subs that their business was inturupted while a workable soloution was found.
Why, because the Commissioners were threatening to make them replace the three roads that there were destroying??...THEY were tearing them up and by all rights, THEY should be responsible for them, NOT the 24,000 residents of Decatur County.
The Highway Super has EVERY RIGHT to stand up and try to protect the County Roads, that is his job!
On this point, we completely agree, the buck DOES stop with the Commissioners and they do have to answer to the taxpayers, which is why, although not a perfect soloution, what they did was the right thing to do. Allowing a bunch of subs to destroy three County Roads and then expect the citizens of Decatur County the pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to replace those roads is not something I ever want to see one of my County Commissioners do. The buck did stop with them and they made the best decision on behalf of the taxpayers of Decatur County.
No, Global's point of view was, hey, our subs are making us look bad in the public eye and we certainly do not want to replace three County Roads that they are tearing up while working on our project.
This is true, but only lasted a few days until the road rotation soloution was put into place.
It took the owners of the quarry, Global, Milestone, Poindexter, Highway Super and the subs working together to find a workable soloution.
If you ever sat in on some of those Commissioner meetings or spoke to the Commissioners as I did on several occassions, then you would know that the current Commissioners at least, had a pretty good handle on the scope of the Global project. Remember, two of them are/were contractors themselves.
The Commissioners directed the Highway Super to do his job, which is to protect and maintain the County Road system. For anyone who believes that these roads are in the same shape today that they were in two years ago, I challenge you to take a short drive. Just take the by-pass west of Lowes to 280 West and turn South, follow 280 W to the T and turn Left onto 250 South, follow 250 S to the first road and turn Right onto 220 SW and follow 220 SW to the quarry. I can promise you that you will find very worn roads and edges that have been eaten away. I drive these roads on a regular basis and I KNOW that these roads are NOT in the same condition that they were two years ago.
The Commissioners did use their power to help the citizens of Decatur County by not making the taxpayer resposible for replacing three roadways that a bunch of subs were tearing up.
The quarry owners were really innocent victims in this mess and fortunately, a reasonable soloution was found fairly quickly. As to your point about the Commissioners, again, they did what was best for the taxpayers of Decatur County, not just what was good for one business owner and a fleet of subs.
If "your" candidates would have simply allowed these three roads to be destroyed and then stick the taxpayers of Decatur County with spending literally hundreds of thousands of dollars to replace them, then I need not say more. Vote for RESPONSIBLE Commissioners, vote for Charles Buell and John Richards. Two men who lead our community with the best interest of ALL Decatur County citizens in mind. |

Okay, I'm reading and getting some good information. I'll stick by my own request and not debate with any one. I can find plenty of sources to verify any information if I want to do so. But I do want more. Yes, how might each candidate influence my life, local and larger. I appreciate the compassion that some of you responding have about your chosen candidates and also the time you appear to have taken to research them. Honestly, I'm thinking I'd far more enjoy the glass of tea with some of you more than others but seeing that this thread has been viewed 400 times I think that some of us will benefit from the information. Thank you.

oH!my! If you have any question on my post
please ask,You and only you will I answer to. My vote for commissioner will be for John Richards, Which in the last four months I have gotten to know pretty will, I just do not know David Best. I'm leaning toward Rick Nobbe at this time because of his age, not saying Charlie is to old but it is time to put some more youth into are local government. |
