not just a good one, for my furbabies. I have 2 small dogs, one is old and blind, but not sick. The other is about 5 years old and in good health. I need someone we can establish a rapport with. Someone who loves the animals as much as they love their work. Want the same vet each time they visit too. They'll need their shots in a few months and their Heartgard before then. The older one will need his eyedrops too. So, if you have a pet that you consider family, who do you recommend?

And a question please...Down south we give the dogs topical flea protection each month. Is that needed here in the winter months when there's a hard freeze?

Thanks in advance!

Gabriella My friend takes her dogs to Shivley Animal Hospital. One of the dogs is a diabetic he gets two shots a day and he is blind they take very good care of Baxter. I will get the name of the doctor they see. The services they provide are less costly than some other vets around. The animal hospital is in Louisville Ky.

Try Dr. Powell at Eastside Animal Hospital on 10th Street. She is wonderful.

We also use her, and it's located on 10th street and also has the different hours we need.

I take mine to Shively Animal Clinic. Dr Fuchs and his 5 adult children are all vets. The children grew up working in the clinic. They have seen and treated everything since 1965. A long wait most days but well worth it.

The weather here kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and most worms.
I don't give flea or heartworm when not necessary
but you really have to watch the weather closely.
It's probably best for most people to just give them year round.
A mistake (especially with heartworm) could be problematic.

Ahh... a positive forum for once!! Smiler

we just got a dog and have had her records sent to allison lane AH. We have heard good things from there, however we have never been. the location is great for us.

i called up there though and the girl said to continue giving flea and misquito because the aren't dying off like they used to, in the winter.

We give flea and heartworm control all year round here. There also seems to have been an increase in ticks the last couple of years so you might want to consider that into the mix when figuring out the regimine for your puppies.

All the Doc's and staff at Eastside Animal Hospital are great. We've been going there for 15 years. Wouldn't think of going anywhere else.

Does anyone know of a Vet that is great with large dogs, and who's fee's are not too bad. I have a large German Shepard Dog that hates going to the Vet. We even tried pills the Vet sold us to give to him before his visit to calm him down.(They didnt work). He's very protective of me and since I get worked up about how he might act that he sences my fear, and that makes him behave bad. Dont get me wrong he is very loveable, but he hates the Vet. He was very wrough with him when he took out the stictches after we had him fixed, and I dont think that he has forgoten that.

I recommend Allison Lane Animal Hospital on Allison Lane in Jeff. Dr. Gettlefinger is great.

My family used Eastside my whole life and I'll never go there again. After the founder Dr. Howard left, and a fire burned it down, they built much larger & brought in a lot more vets. Prices went through the roof. But what made us leave was we had 2 cats, one w/diabetes and one w/renal failure. We had spent thousands of dollars to keep them going for 2-3 years, paid at time of appt every time. Then we found a pregnant stray (after the other 2 died) Took the 4 kittens for first round of shots. They charged exam fee plus shots. Fine. But we had to bring them back in 2-3 weeks for final shots & they insisted on charging the $35.00 exam fee for each again! We asked for a discount due to our many pets (at the time we had a dog & 3 more cats) and our excellent pay records. They said no. Also the vets I encountered after Dr. Howard (great man!) left were condescending and downright rude sometimes. Except Dr. Strong. I did like her.

The final straw: My 14 y.o.cat that had diabetes. When the time came to put him down, I asked my mom to take him & be with him as I couldn't bear to watch. She finally told me a year later that she didn't go in with him because they were going to charge FIFTY DOLLARS to be in the room w/him. So he died alone. I will drive to C-town, Louisville or New Albany before I would go there again. Allison Lane will always fit you in and all the vets are understanding and take time to answer your questions.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience with Eastside. I've taken my cats and dogs to Eastside and have nothing but wonderful experiences. I love Dr Powell and so do my animals, especially our black lab, Jackson. He passed away almost two years ago and the staff there still remember him and how special he was.

Now as for what Eastside charges -vs- what other vets charge, I'll admit have no idea because I've never compared. Cost doesn't matter as much to me as finding someone who loves animals and cares about them.

I go to Hillside in Georgetown.. Their prices are very good, they have great vets, tech and a wonderful clean location, They took care of my dog for over 14 years, he had cancer surgery, and he was groomed there, and everything, When he passed they sent a card, and when we went in with our new puppy, EVERYONE came to meet him and say HI,, It is like family.. I have been to other locations,,and vets and this is by far the best.. from tiny animals to horses and big animals

Well I see 3 votes for Dr. Powell. Think I'll give her a call.

Thanks again!
