So sad to hear about the Clarksville Kmart closing after Christmas. They have been around for so many years. I think their new location hurt them worse than anything, because they are not on Lewis & Clark anymore. This just sickens me and Old Wallyworld should be happy now, too. I still won't go to Wal*Mart, though!
Not surprised by this... the old location was the best. That new location was "out of sight, out of mind". Bad decision by Kmart to leave that spot, but great decision by Kroger to fill it.
I think Kmart is a dying breed. I went in the one in Jeff the other day for the first time in probably a year or so... very nostalgic, but I still couldn't find what I needed. You'd think with all their Craftsman brand stuff and given the recent storm, they could stock 2-cycle engine oil.
I remember a few years back when Kmart and Sears merged, it was said by some that the merger probably would only delay Kmarts problems. They said back then that some kmarts would be converted into Sears stores. I wonder if they actually did change some over to Sears.

I live within walking distance of the Jeffersonville Kmart and I like it! I like their selection of casual clothes. I like their prices when they have sales which is often. I have been able to get all kinds of things like the gadget that needed to be replaced in one of my toilets. I would hate to see it close. I hope that it never does!
This saddens me too. My first "real" job straight out of IUS was as an Assistant Apparel Manager at the Clarksville Kmart. That was back in '83 in it's hey day. Walmart and Target were coming on strong back then but in my opinion our Kmart ruled!
I'm sorry for all those who will lose their jobs just after Christmas. Yes they can apply at other area Kmarts and Sears, but like the article says, there are no guarantees.
Oh and Mike, try Auto Zone for your 2-stroke oil.

You know, Chopper, I'm an idiot... I was so annoyed that Kmart didn't have it (and the "it's out of season" response I got from the worker-bee there), that I ended up driving to Orscheln's in Charlestown. Never crossed my mind to check at Autozone. Doh.
I loved the Jeff K-mart when I was a kid. Used to go in as a kid and put things I wanted on lay-away, and would pay a few bucks out of my allowance or work money every week to get it out. Taught me a lot, actually, about saving up for the things I wanted. I got the gratification of buying the item while not being 100% committed to it, and while saving my money. At least a few times I saved quite a bit of cash, only to change my mind about spending it on whatever I had stuffed away 3-4 months ago.
I don't think those lanes in Jeff have every really changed since the 70s, have they?
(QUOTE)Originally posted by 612: LOL! Your so right! They never use all those checkout lanes anyway. Your lucky if there's 2 lanes open.
And do they even have air conditioning at Jeff anymore. I try not to go there cause it about 110 degrees in that place![/QUOTE]
It's a shame people like you do not have any more sympathy than that when it is common knowledge that not only Wal*Mart and Meijer has hurt their business, but other possible reasons have caused a decline in sales. I never see that many people at Kmart anymore, so it does take public funding to keep the stores running properly. Why I wouldn't stand in those lines at Wal*Mart or park all the way at the end of the lot just to save a few pennies (sometimes more I will agree), but it's also the sizes of those stores that annoy me and I tend to spend more money than I had planned due to more items available. Furthermore I guess Wal*Mart can sell their mercandise cheaper, though due to the lots they order of each product due to them selling more which the latter proves why they also have the items you need more readily on hand.
P.S. I will be shopping the Clarksville Kmart for Christmas this year; I'd be willing to say you will get some good bargains, but it's still sad to see them close after so many years of being part of the Clark County community.
