My sense of it is that Americans are willing to give Biden the benefit of the doubt because he's proven himself with three decades of competent leadership. But all we know about Palin is what we've seen over the past month, and so far, it's not been so great.

Shrub is George Bush. He's saying the VP debate is going on while George Bush is a lousy president. The subtext is don't get too caught up in the VP debate when our country is going to hell in a handbasket under Bush. He's saying concentrate more on the presidential candidates. He's saying forget all the hubub about the unknown Gov. Sarah Baracuta and the silver-tongued devil from the Senate and concentrate on the issues that really have importance. He's saying the religious right is beginning to see the error of their ways. He's saying Pat Robertson and James Dobson should never have aligned themselves with George Bush and Dick Cheney. He's saying . . . hell, I don't know really. I think he's just saying Bush is a lousy president.

I was just playing around. I could just picture the editor going bonkers watching some fool (me) read way more into what he said than what he meant. I imagine editors have to worry all the time about people reading what the paper writes through the reader's own biases and I was just poking a little fun at that phenomenon. I wasn't poking fun at you. Really, all he was saying is that Shrub (Bush) is a lousy potentate (president). It was pretty obscure, but he found a really good word to rhyme with debate/late!
