RE: http://www.news-tribune.net/opinion/local_story_310204416.html
Peggy DeKay's essay on health care and euthanasia include some ludicrous statements and some outlandish allusions. She says that most Democrats, including Barack Obama, and some Republicans are pressing for socialized medicine. They are not. There is a grassroots movement toward having a national health care insurance program that would embrace our private doctor and hospital systems. Doctors and hospitals would not be employed by the state as happens in socialized medicine countries. She also ties euthanasia to national health care. There is no connection. The state of Washington has just followed Oregan to allow families and patients choose to die with some level of dignity. This has nothing to do with "the state pulling the plug." It is all about the ill patient, the family along with doctors determining when meaningful life has ended. Regardless, this issue has nothing to do with having a national health insurance program, which all other industrialized nations in the world already have. The U.S. is alone on this one. It was a sad day when newspapers decided they could save money by allowing ordinary citizens to write columns instead of paying real columnists. Most (notice I didn’t say all) of the people writing columns for the Evening News are not worth reading. The entire editorial page is mostly wasted space now, but hey, it saves the paper money. I have long since put Peggy DeKay in the not-worth-reading category.
