Hi everyone,

As promised during my election campaign, I intend to open the doors of communication between the GCCS Corporation Board of Trustees and the general public. I plan on using this thread to post any upcoming meetings, important dates and to answer your questions regarding issues with the schools and board decisions. I have the largest "district" with 5 schools including Jeffersonville High, River Valley Middle, Riverside Elementary, Wilson Elementary and Thomas Jefferson Elementary. These are the specific schools I "represent" although I will make my decisions based on what is best for all schools corporation wide. Let me lay a few ground rules:
1. If you ask me a question I do not know the answer to, I will find out and post an answer within 72 hours.
2. I will check this thread three days a week and respond in a timely manner.
3. Please DO NOT ask me "personal" questions about any other board members. If you want to know something about them, ask them.

I look forward to serving all of you as I officially take office July 1st but will not be sworn in until the next regular school board meeting, July 8th @ 7pm @ the Admin building. I truly hope this thread will be one tool to help open communication up for us all.

Sincerely,

Christina Gilkey

I'm confused, on another thread I stated that a friend of mine said the teacher's insurance costs rose to $400 for a single and $1,000 for family coverage and had a another teacher confirm that this is the case. Then I saw an article in the courier the other day and it listed different numbers. Could you please confirm which is the actual cost. Thank you.

Santa,
As of June 1st, teachers pay $1 monthly for an individual plan (GCCS pays $371.72) and $558.86 monthly to cover one or more dependents (GCCS pays $558.86).

Christina,

Can you explain to all of us why we are hiring another lawyer at a time when we have no money? We have cut teachers, even though most were called back and made other cuts that are only going to hurt our kids. Everyone knows that the Jeff High building renovations is over budget and we need to somehow make up for that but we keep adding positions that we CAN do without. What can Wilder do that Lewis cant do?Its very frustrating to know that we hear how tight things are but yet they are adding more fat to the piggy back instead of trimming of the fat.

OMG knock me out of my seat! Actually a school board member who will answer our questions without having to wait for a month and with only 5 minutes to do so in and actually give us an answer?! That's great! Hope it works out! Ok, I have a question.... with all the money gccs is paying Halo company to do the gccs website... can we put the video of the school board meetings on the website? Then people who are not able to attend could see the school board in action from their own home. Is that possible. ok, you have 3 days, the clock is ticking! HA ha! Thanks for letting us ask.

Dear Concerned,

That vote was made at the June meeting. I will not officially be a voting board member until July; however, I was at that meeting as a "citizen". I have asked those exact same questions and have been given various answers such as for special occasions like contract negotiations. I personally would have voted against hiring another attorney. I do not feel hiring a "board" attorney is fiscally responsible, even IF it is "needed". We NEED more teachers/aides in the classrooms. That has to be our number one priority. In short, I can't explain why we "need" to hire an attorney because I agree with you and when the contract comes up for a vote, hopefully I can get 3 more "opposed".

Dear Volunteer,

I put in a call to the IT department today around lunchtime and I am waiting for an answer. As soon as they get back to me, I'll post the answer. Thank you for your suggestion. I feel making the videos available on the GCCS website would be a valuable informational tool to the general public. I'm also going to try to get our "regular" meetings set up on a rotation so that every three months each of our three communities will host a meeting. This small, free change in policy will also help to increase communication and accessibility.
