Dear Volunteer,

Talked to IT today and YES it is possible to put some type of video on the website. However, it seems there is a lot more to it than just being possible. IT has referred me to our PR Director (Erin) and I'm waiting on a call from her. The "source" of the video can be done a couple different ways such as having a "link" on our website to YouTube or simply having a link on our website which will allow people to download the video. Depending on the video source and whether or not it is compatible with our equipment, we may have to invest in some different software or new equipment. It also appears I have to talk to our legal dept. to see if our current policy allowing students to be seen in "marketing materials" would cover us for "recognitions" and so forth. Hope that information tides you over for a while. I'll post more info as I talk to the various department heads. Thanks!!

Dear Volunteer,

I put in a call to the IT department today around lunchtime and I am waiting for an answer. As soon as they get back to me, I'll post the answer. Thank you for your suggestion. I feel making the videos available on the GCCS website would be a valuable informational tool to the general public. I'm also going to try to get our "regular" meetings set up on a rotation so that every three months each of our three communities will host a meeting. This small, free change in policy will also help to increase communication and accessibility.

Thanks Christina, I'll keep checking to see what you find out.

You know, if there's a problem with the kids being on it then we could just not put it on there, but, I bet it would be sweet for grandparents in another state to see their grandkid getting an award. Just a thought. I love the internet. If they can explain to us how to get it from dvd to whatever format they need, I think it would be better if they didn't have to download it, just "live stream " just watch it. You know, like the news stations do. Thanks for working on this, I think this would be a big improvement on getting the community to see the school board meetings!

I am constantly striving for ways to improve communication between us and the community. Your suggestion could be a great tool!!! In a time when our budget is TIGHT, free or inexpensive opportunities are priceless to me. Please continue to let me know of any other suggestions you have. I know I am only one person and if we all band together for the sake of helping our children learn then we all will benefit from a team effort!! I'll keep you posted. Thank you again.

Assist 1...I applaud your enthusiasm and willingness to communicate with ordinary guys and gals...that being said I've got a couple questions...

How much does the corporation spend giving a 2% raise to the teachers group?

What is in the works for GCCS' next building project? The current project seems to be reactive instead of proactive...

What are your feelings on superintendent search? Your comments on hiring from within versus outside hiring...

Thanks Christina...

Am I correct that the last time we searched and held interviews for our superintendent, it cost the corporation quite a bit of money for the process....I can't remember exactly how much they said, but I thought it was tens of thousands of dollars. Why does it cost money to interview people? Also, why is it necessary to have a panel of people from colleges and universities in Indiana and Kentucky on that search/interview panel? Shouldn't the people who will work with the new superintendent directly be the ones who make that decision?

What about WJHS? Don't they do the city council meetings? Why not the school board as well? I was one of the "kids" who started WJHS back up way back when and I think it would be nice for them to get a shot at broadcasting the meetings. Just a thought Smiler

Yes, you're correct, WJHS Does put the board meetings on the air, I give them a copy of the video so they can do so. But, right now, the head of WJHS, Tom Gross, is away for summer break, he lives 2 hours away! So, until we start school again we can't get the video on. But, also, a lot of people don't have cable, I don't, we can afford either internet or cable, but not both. So, on the internet would also be a way, but, I'll keep getting copies of the school board meetings to Wjhs when they start up again. It's hard for the students to tape when they have jobs at night and they also have other school activities to film.

Good morning,

I'm Erin Bojorquez, the Public Relations Specialist, for the corporation. To answer everyone's questions....yes, the process to film the school board meetings began in the spring. Mr. Gross and I decided to begin filming the board meetings at the start of the 2008-2009 school year, due to the fact that WJHS students are out for the summer. We thought it would be great to start something new and fresh at the beginning of a school year, not at the end of last school year. I spoke to Ms. Gilkey about putting the meetings on our website. There's a lengthy process involved, but the ball is rolling. Also, as most of you know the school board approved the design of a new website. I'm working on inputting all the information, so the website will launch in August. It looks great! If you have questions, feel free to contact me or reply to this post.

Thanks!
Erin Bojorquez

Great! As long as someone does it and puts it on the web that will be great to put on the web and let the public see it right from their home computer. Mr Gross is still going to put them on WJHS, right? A lot of people have been watching them on WJHS also. I'll keep taping during the summer and taking them to the libraries until you can get them on the internet website. Thanks!

Dear Ordinary,

Great questions. Please keep in mind I am not the CFO but I did some homework and IF I figured it correctly, the increase from the 2006 "Instruction" salary budget given a 2% pay raise would cost an additional $824,913. This raise will be voted on at the July 8th meeting and it is for the 2007-2008 school year (retro).

As for your second question, I agree, there have been more reactive decisions made with regard to buildings and maintenance than not. I spoke in depth to Dr. Bennett yesterday about this and he is going to have a speaker give us a brief presentation during our executive session July 8th to address more "proactive solutions" and the use of a recent Senate bill that would help us with building projects.

The superintendent search is going to be a large task. As far as hiring someone locally or an "outsider", I truly don't have a preference as long as the person has a proven track record of improving schools or has some outstanding ideas for how to improve our schools. Really Good Super's already have good positions elsewhere so our person is gonna have to probably be someone local who is trying to improve their situation or someone from outside who is up for a good challenge. Thank you for your interest and please feel free to give your input.

Dear Arwen,

I will be honest with you, I haven't done much homework on the last superintendent search but I would agree with you about having outside people sit on "OUR" committee. I actually would like to see a principal, a teacher, a parent and a student on the committee as well as other admin staff, like Sandy Lewis for example. These are the people who will be DIRECTLY impacted on a daily basis by the new leader. I am not sure how much money it cost us to do the last search but I am going to put in a call to Mike Hodgson tomorrow and see what I can find out. The only expenses I can think of would be advertising for the position such as in the Courier or online services like MONSTER.com, etc.

As I get more answers, I'll keep you posted. Thank you for your interest.

Dear Flower girl and Volunteer,

Spoke to Erin Bojorquez today and she is working with Tom Gross to have the board meetings on WJHS. When he comes back from summer break, she is also going to see if we can somehow work with him to get the exact type of data we need to be linked on the internet. We have set a target date for the August meeting. Will give you more info as I get it. Thank you for your interest!!

New question, I noticed in the school board meeting agenda to be... in item K there's going to be voting on Valentine Enterprises contract, Will Robbie abstain on voting? That would be odd his voting for his own business, like I'd like to vote myself a raise! Ha! The public never has a clue on what y'all are voting on with the agendas, how can I find out what the board is actually voting on? For example, on the agenda is London Bridge, does that mean they'd be voting to buy it? Is there any way the public can know what the board is voting on?
I am hoping ernie won't be making any more "give my buddy a job" under "school board member comments" is it true they actually came to the conclusion to give larry wilder a job?
