Hi Volunteer,

As for Mr. Valentine's contract, I can't say what he will/won't do; however, if a board member "abstains", his/her vote automatically counts as a vote with the majority. In my personal opinion, when a vote with direct conflict comes up, the board member should physically get up and leave the room so he/she is technically absent during the vote and therefore wouldn't count one way or another.

As far as the public not knowing what (specifically) is being voted on, it's because the past habit of the board has been to just vote with very few (if any) discussions or questions being answered. Maybe this was because the board members were experienced and already had all the info they needed to make an informed decision. I, on the other hand, am new and have many questions. I have been very frustrated with the lack of "transparency" at meetings and I intend to shed light on many issues so WE can all be informed and I can make responsible decisions.

I don't think I'm allowed to talk about certain issues before they are voted on; however, I can certainly answer any "specifics" on here or personally after votes have been made.

With regard to Larry Wilder, YES, the previous board voted (3-2) to hire him as a board attorney. However, a "contract" has to be approved by THIS board before he would offically be hired and paid for that position. His contract is NOT on this month's agenda but when it does come up for a vote, I will be voting against it.

I'm very excited about my first meeting and I'm looking forward to serving all of you.

Sincerely,

Christina

P.S. Sorry I was a few minutes past 72 hours answering you. Wink

That would be odd his voting for his own business, like I'd like to vote myself a raise! Ha! The public never has a clue on what y'all are voting on with the agendas, how can I find out what the board is actually voting on? For example, on the agenda is London Bridge, does that mean they'd be voting to buy it? Is there any way the public can know what the board is voting on?
I am hoping ernie won't be making any more "give my buddy a job" under "school board member comments" is it true they actually came to the conclusion to give larry wilder a job?

Hi Christina, you're like a breath of fresh air to the school board! So, if the person leaves the room, their "abstaining" would remove their vote from going with the majority?! Are you sure? That would solve some problems with the school board voting. If I had known this fact last week I would have gotten on the agenda to talk to mention about the board member leaving the room, but, I can't speak now because it's not a week in advance, but, I will probably get up the next month and point out some conflicts of interested to rv (rv enterprises) and ernie, and his former lawyer wilder and maybe they will be honest and leave the room so their abstaining won't be a vote for what they will profit from. I would never want to be on the school board, but, I sure hate to see all the underhanded stuff going on as it is right now. Thanks for taking your time to be on the board!

Volunteer,

I'm going to double check my strategy with Sandy Lewis but I believe if a board member physically leaves the room during a vote, then technically he/she should be counted "absent" during the vote which means he/she would not have any vote on the matter. This action would ensure that an abstintion (?) could not be misused to count with a majority. The rules about "conflict of interest" are very clear. They state if a board member or any immediate family member (spouse, child, sibling or parent) will profit directly from a decision, then it's a "conflict". As board members, we are required by law to disclose (in writing) any potential conflicts. These statements will be presented before the board on Tuesday and we will all have to vote on whether or not to accept each other's disclosure statements.

As far as serving on the GCCS board, it's my pleasure. I made the decision to run with my eyes wide open to the challenges I will face. However, in the words of someone great (I forget exactly who right now), "all it takes for evil to prevail in this world is for good men (or women Wink) to do nothing." In other words, if you really want change, then you have to be involved in making changes!!! I'm committed to being a board member who makes decisions based on what's best for our children and our corporation. Hopefully, that attitude will be "catching" and spread.

I'd like to know if ernie will list wilder as a conflict of interest due to his use of wilder as his lawyer, and rv with rv enterprises.... see ya at the meeting Tues!

Christina,

Please respond to my questions to you in the forum regarding tonights board meeting. Thank you. And my hats off to you for asking questions and not allowing them to approve everything in one lump sum without explanation. We as teachers and the public dont get all that explanations and I really learned a lot tonight as well as continued to get frustrated with the entire meeting. But I am glad you were there to do your part.

Christina - Why do you think this board felt the need for another attorney?

Christina Gilkey voted AGAINST another board attorney, along with Becca Christensen. Missy DeArk abstained for her stated reasons...

Vote 5 to 2 for LW ( abstain goes to majority)

Christina, you gave it your best shot with trying to get missy's vote not to go with the majority. So, it would have been too late for her to get up to leave therefore her vote not being counted with the majority?
You did an excellant job with speaking up! It doesn't happen often that anything is ever questioned. So, wilder will be getting $24,000 a year, FOR WHAT? Im glad you voted against it.
I told some teacher friends of mine the tabling of their contract, their response is anger, and, "I wouldn't put it past them!" not surprised. Others are saying they should strike. What is your opinion on tabling of the contract?
Thanks again for speaking up! It takes guts.

Oh, another question, what is your opinion of the contract bus drivers and their request for help with the 40% gas increase?
How can we start getting the video of the school board meetings on the web? I'll do anything I can to help get the public to see the school board meetings.

I am so confused............
I see everyone praising miss gilkey, but saying things like I new the board would do it in reference to tableing the teacher raise.

mrs. Gilkey voted to table the raise people......
If you are going to get on the board she deserves your wrath on this one as well.

I agree with you mad mom. Gilkey should have voted to pass the teacher salary but what the people are saying that were in attendance last night, is that Gilkey did what no one else has really done before: questioned where money was going, what is was being used for, she was reading all the fine details and questioning EVERYTHING that didn't make sense. So yes we are upset she voted to also table the teachers salary increase FOR LAST YEAR but thanking her for not just approving the entire agenda like the rest of the board does. She had questions for Ann Schnepf, Amy Schellenberg, Milton Clayton, Sandy Lewis, as well as other board members. We have to start somewhere.

Mad Mom,
Do you ever have anything nice to say?
Were you there? You would be in shock and awe like the rest of us.
HELLO, they are holding off on giving them a raise because they are suing them, the school board bargined in good faith while some of the teachers were planning a lawsuit.
We are not even required to give them a raise at all.
Now, don't get me wrong I am all for teachers, more of them, seing them get rewarded for the very diffcult work they do. See my previos posts and threads.
BUT, Should I make you breakfast while you are pissing in my shoes???
I have done some research on the matter and GCCS teachers are some of the highest paid in a 4 state region.
Chrsitina kicked A** and took names last night. She did it professionally and resonably.
We should all be prous of our two new board members questioning the process!!!!

Redhot....You think any of this is political with Dr. Bennett seeking state office?? Also I was not aware that the teachers made so much....How much do they make? Is it in line with the attorney making $100 per hour?
