RE: http://www.newsandtribune.com/local/local_story_206111906.html
Sooo... I guess this means these kids will be walking along the sidewalk-less Allison Lane to get to school now? I'm sure that's not the only reason kids were cutting through there, but it IS a viable reason and shortcut. I find it interesting the City Council finds time to debate basketball goals on streets in the name of making things safer for kids, but can not find a way to put sidewalks in a school zone. Perhaps Larry Thomas (is he still around) can provide some insight here. Is there a plan underway to put sidewalks in this area, or revamp that section of Allison Lane? If so, what is the timeline? This also brings to mind some other road projects. We've been told that:
Phew! And if you ask, the common answer seems to be "late 2008 or 2009/2010". That's a LOT of road work! And it all NEEDS to be done for purposes of traffic and pedestrian safety. However, I've yet to see one surveyor or flag in the ground for any of these. But we can break ground and invest $500,000 into roadwork for the PRIVATE Town Center development! Look, I want to see the Town Center flourish as much as anyone. But when it comes to road work thus far, I don't see that Galligan is getting ANYTHING done in these other areas that really seem more important. So can someone please provide an update on these projects? Are they real, just promises, or am I dreaming? Perhaps if Larry can't respond, the EN can look into these projects and get some straight answers. One bit of info... I was told by an engineer for Jacobi, Toombs & Lantz that they were working the plan for Salem-Noble, yet someone (the county, presumedly?) went through and paved portions of it last year. With the growth of River Ridge, that intersection at SN and 62 is getting VERY dangerous! I know 62 belongs to the State, but who dictates whether a light gets put in there? The turning lanes are WAAAAYYY too short for the traffic using that intersection and having to cross at an angle to the railroad tracks! And it's become like Talledega there during morning and afternoon rushes. |

I totally agree with the improvements and sidewalks needed for Allison Lane. So many of our students walk and its so dangerous! Especially with ongoing construction there is more car traffic that builds up because there is no where for them to park to pick up and drop off students. I believe it will take a serious pedestrian accident before the city takes action. The traffic in the morning and around 240 is horrible on Allison Lane and traffic backs up forever. Adding a light to the exit of Jeff High was done at one intersection and if you put one at the other Im not sure it will speed things up more going down Allison Lane. It needs to be widened for sure. |

I was told by Barbara Wilson over a year ago that they were going to put sidewalks on the area between Jeff High School and the entrances to the area where Kmart and Kroger are located and also on the other side where Meijers is located. It never happened. Many of the students walk to the stores. In addition even adults are walking to the stores. I think that it definitely should be done as promised.

Agreed. There is also significantly increased foot traffic around the Holman's Lane/Veteran's Parkway/Charlestown Pike intersection, mainly due to the nearby apartments and homes that are there now. That area needs sidewalks, as well - at least enough that kids/parents could walk to Wilson and River Valley.

It won't be too much longer before Galligan condemns another property that doesn't belong to him and gets the city sued (again).
Galligan is so intent on outdoing the previous administration, it is scary. BTW, do we know about the alleged fraudulent absentee voting? Is fatboy really even our Mayor? LOL |

Thus far, I've been unable to tell a difference between Galligan and Waiz, excepting that more ordinances have been passed to cost us money, and Galligan's supporters are being hired left and right. But outside that, I've not really seen any improvement in Jeffersonville, per se.

During Council workshops, plans were presented for sidewalks on both 8th st. and Allison Ln. 8th street is now complete. The Allison Ln. plans were to be on the school side of Allison Ln. all the way to middle Rd. I recall discussion of a state grant when sidewalks include school zones, perhaps that is the delay. The same firm was doing both projects...one is complete, perhaps the other will start soon. In the last few years, ALL council ordained sidewalks have been completed, with the exception of Allison Ln. However plans have been drawn up, so perhaps our patience shall be rewarded...

I don't want to see another dime spent on Veteran's Parkway until Salem-Noble road is widened by the city of Jeffersonville! You annexed us. Now take care of us.

What really happened with the property at 10th and Spring? I've heard the "He tore down buildings that the city didn't own." I've read/heard it was a joint venture between the city and Glenn Lewis and also that the property was sold to the city and then the seller backed out. What's the real story there? |

As I understood it, the 10th and Spring deal WAS a joint venture between the City and Lewis, but the deal was not finalized. I assume that means they had not reached an agreement on $$. The City was to work with Lewis to "joint market" the property. But before it was all done, Galligan had the building knocked down. That ticked off Lewis, because the deal wasn't done -- the city didn't own the property (yet).
Ironically, I think with the building gone, it made the property worth more $$. I believe the City ended up having to pay Lewis for the building. And of course, today it just sits. Both corners. And now someone has made a pile of rubble next to the DQ. I guess that'll sit forever, too? I agree with Mike... until Salem-Noble is done, we shouldn't really be pouring more $$ into Veteran's Parkway (the road). While I agree as much as the next person that it DOES need to be done, it's not as bad as Salem-Noble and the intersection at 62. Something gives me the sense that now that the City has taken over, the plans to revamp it may have been shelved. It would be nice to get some real answers on these projects. The intersection of C-town and Hamburg Pikes is really bad, too. Especially with the school there. Larry Thomas, are you out there? This message has been edited. Last edited by: Supermike, |

Two Items:
1) I spoke to the council over two years ago about the lack of sidewalks in front of the high school and all the foot traffic. As you can see, two years after my complaint and 35 years after they built the high school, nothing is done. 2) Usually a developer has to build his own roads and then they turn them over to the town or county as public roads afterwhich they are maintained by the government. Not so at Veterans. Apparently, Redevelopment is going to provide the money to extend some roads on the developer's PRIVATE PROPERTY afterwhich he will turn it over to Jeffersonville for maintenance. Sound a little backwards? Galligan... developers... public money... hmmmm, let me ponder this. |

That makes a little more sense. Tearing down those buildings improved the property but Lewis probably lost a few bucks on fireworks revenue. I agree on the Salem-Noble improvements. It's like an obstacle course making that turn from 62. |

Mike Moore, don't you remember a few months ago when Councilman #2 told us that the city annexed the tax payers, not the roads? (yes I'm still fuming about that) At that time I believe we were talking about Charlestown-New Albany Pike. But it was too long ago for me to be able to pull a quote from the archived posts. Darn it.

Yes ChopperWoman I remember it well, the city didn't accept the responsibility of Salem-Noble road, they just wanted the revenue from the homes out there. That doesn't make it right, it just makes them greedy.

I still don't see how they can annex the homes, but not the road that you have to use to GET to the homes. I do know that somehow they had avoided annexing the portion of Charlestown Pike which included the railroad tracks under the 265 overpass (which are getting really bad) and portions of Utica-Sellersburg Road.
As for Salem-Noble, I'm afraid we'll get the same spiel. Even though I KNOW that plans were in the works (according to the engineer), the City will likely shirk responsibility and try to put it off on the State. And if we wait on the state, we may as well be crying alone in the middle of a cornfield. I doubt they'll hear us. |
