Bump for historical purposes. I don't want this topic to slide as it has some good info in it.

The board agreed to put a 6-foot fence around a cul-de-sac on Blue Teal Lane. The fence is being erected because children in the area are walking and taking mopeds through the cul-de-sac and onto nearby private property, said Barbara Wilson, a board member and city councilwoman.

Planning Director Jim Urban noted that many of the kids that are cutting through are on their way to Jeffersonville High School. The cut-through is being used in part because there are no sidewalks on Allison Lane, he said.

Sooo... I guess this means these kids will be walking along the sidewalk-less Allison Lane to get to school now? I'm sure that's not the only reason kids were cutting through there, but it IS a viable reason and shortcut. I find it interesting the City Council finds time to debate basketball goals on streets in the name of making things safer for kids, but can not find a way to put sidewalks in a school zone.

Perhaps Larry Thomas (is he still around) can provide some insight here. Is there a plan underway to put sidewalks in this area, or revamp that section of Allison Lane? If so, what is the timeline?

This also brings to mind some other road projects. We've been told that:

  • Salem Noble is going to be overhauled from 62 to High Jackson (graded, straigtened, widened)
  • that Holman Lane is going to be widened and sidewalked
  • that the intersection of Charlestown-Jeff Pike and Hamburg Pike (by TJ Elem.) is going to be redesigned
  • that Hamburg Pike itself is going to be widened and graded
  • that portions of Allison Lane are going to be reworked
  • that there will be a light on 10th by the JHS exit
  • that Veteran's Parkway from Hamburg Pike to Holman's Lane is going to be completed
  • that portions of 10th Street are "planned" to be widened
  • and finally that the remainder of the Spring Street overhaul is going to be completed.

Phew! And if you ask, the common answer seems to be "late 2008 or 2009/2010". That's a LOT of road work! And it all NEEDS to be done for purposes of traffic and pedestrian safety. However, I've yet to see one surveyor or flag in the ground for any of these. But we can break ground and invest $500,000 into roadwork for the PRIVATE Town Center development!

Look, I want to see the Town Center flourish as much as anyone. But when it comes to road work thus far, I don't see that Galligan is getting ANYTHING done in these other areas that really seem more important. So can someone please provide an update on these projects? Are they real, just promises, or am I dreaming? Perhaps if Larry can't respond, the EN can look into these projects and get some straight answers.

One bit of info... I was told by an engineer for Jacobi, Toombs & Lantz that they were working the plan for Salem-Noble, yet someone (the county, presumedly?) went through and paved portions of it last year. With the growth of River Ridge, that intersection at SN and 62 is getting VERY dangerous! I know 62 belongs to the State, but who dictates whether a light gets put in there? The turning lanes are WAAAAYYY too short for the traffic using that intersection and having to cross at an angle to the railroad tracks! And it's become like Talledega there during morning and afternoon rushes.

Hey there Supermike,
let me add to the dreamlist here, what about the promises of fixing the downtown residential areas of flooding? It has been almost a year and my family has been told more stories about what they are going to do but everytime it rains we live in fear of the flooding. Meanwhile back at the Hall of Justice aka city hall they continue to spend money on drainage areas on Veterans parkway. I went by there over the weekend and there is only 1 building there and the rest is open fields. But we have to spend all this money to promote the area while the rest of the city suffers. Where are the priorities in this city? We are the fools that placed these people in these seats to run our city. I think it is time to remove them and start all over again. Thanks Supermike for being honest on here.

Sorry for the double-post, but I thought this applied to this topic, as well, and I don't want this thread to die.

In case anyone may have missed this:

quote:
Commissioners approved a plan to begin a traffic study at Salem-Noble Road and Ind. 62.

Commissioner Mike Moore wants to get a traffic light installed at the intersection, and the traffic signal study is the first step in the process.

The study will provide a specific decision as to whether a light is needed. Commissioner Ed Meyer said Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan expressed interest in working with the county and splitting the cost of the study, which is estimated to be about $3,500.

http://www.news-tribune.net/local/local_story_291114427.html

Note to those living in the area:
If you have been avoiding this intersection due to the traffic, PLEASE begin using it again at least for the duration of the study. I know quite a few people are using alternate routes in order to avoid this intersection, but if the traffic numbers are down, we won't get the light. So if you are current travelling down Stacy Road, or up Charlestown Pike to Vet's Parkway or Utica Sellersburg, I encourage you to use the Salem-Noble intersection again for a while. Of course, PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!

(Note to Mike Moore - please let us know when the study begins!)

Hey Mike,

I heard about that... posted another thread on it. WHAS11 makes it sound like 11 were taken to the hospital?

Either way... how horrible. Those poor kids. This place is ridiculous! When I drove past there last Friday mid-morning, the lot was so full there was no place to park. People were jockeying for spaces like Christmas at the mall.

Have they even met all the requests the county made and they agreed to? I think their sewers are still going to temporary holding tank. And there still is no fence around the property. Has our good buddy Ed Meyer even tried to convene the advisory board for this place yet?! I'm thinking the answer to that is NO.

The board allowed Eastside Christian church a waiver on a zoning rule that requires sidewalks to be built on the property.

The church is expanding, explained Jim Urban, the city’s planning director. Because of the size of the expansion, the city’s zoning ordinance requires sidewalks to be constructed.

However, road construction is planned in the area within the next few years and it’s unclear where the sidewalks would need to be put in.

You know... why even HAVE a sidewalk ordinance? Apparently one wasn't necessary in front of the new fire departments. And now one isn't going to be put in front of Eastside... so what purpose is the ordinance serving?

I understand the uncertainty of the road construction that is SUPPOSED to happen there, and that it would be wasteful to put in a sidewalk only to tear it up a year later. But instead of giving them a waiver, why not require that they deposit a certain amount into a sidewalk fund, to ensure there will be funds later??

Speaking of roads and sidewalks and lights.... Does anyone know when those sidewalks on Alison Lane, and the traffic light on 10th coming out of Jeff High, are going to be started?

Sidewalks on Allison lane (Little Havana) are desperately needed.

It's only a matter of time before someone dies.

Little Havana??...What's up with that??...I live in the same general area as you, and I've never seen anything to make me inclined to even think about a reference like that...Even so, what's so bad about Havana anyway??!!

I have lived here 46 years, this has never happend before.

Not trying to be rude, but... Can we keep this discussion to roads and sidewalks and not try to resolve immigration issues here?

SM...Yep, this can return to the subject at hand...I want sidewalks down Utica Pike, ( farther up than they are now, that is)...I don't think it'll happen, or that it would be deemed that practical either...But, it would be nice for walking the dog.

Allison Lane sidewalk has been designed, council has designated funds to complete the project, the right of way is set, bids have been opened, job has been contracted and actual contruction will start anytime (weather permitting).
