Here we go again... this is beyond tolerance.
Source: ASSOCIATED PRESS 4.29.08 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By: ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer "Army officials said Tuesday they are inspecting every barracks building worldwide to see whether plumbing and other problems revealed at Fort Bragg, N.C., last week are widespread. Brig. Gen. Dennis Rogers, who is responsible for maintaining barracks throughout the Army, told reporters at the Pentagon that most inspections were done last weekend but he had not seen final results. While not providing specifics about problems discovered during the weekend inspections, Rogers indicated some deficiencies were corrected. In cases where extensive repairs are deemed necessary, the soldiers in that housing would be moved elsewhere until the fixes are completed, he added. Rogers said it was too soon to know whether the Fort Bragg problem was an isolated incident. He acknowledged the revelations from a video shot by the father of an 82nd Airborne Division soldier showing poor conditions such as mold inside the barracks, peeling interior paint and a bathroom drain plugged with sewage. The soldier's father, Ed Frawley, said he was disgusted by the conditions that greeted his son and the rest of his 82nd Airborne unit that returned on April 7-8 after a 15-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. "We let our soldiers down, and that's not like us," Rogers told reporters. "We let our soldiers down. That's not how we want America's sons and daughters to live. There's no good excuse for what happened." He said the problems in that building have been fixed and that a final paint job is in the works. It is one of 24 barracks at Fort Bragg that were built in the 1950s and are scheduled for demolition by 2013. The barracks singled out by Frawley had been remodeled in April 2006, Rogers said..." |

Somewhat similar article...
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Cheated. Baited and switched. That's how veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan say they feel about military recruiters who sold them on how the GI Bill would benefit them. Marine Todd Bowers did two tours in Iraq and returned to the United States to face student loan problems. Soldiers, Marines and airmen, speaking at a Capitol Hill rally Tuesday, said they are not given enough funds from the bill to cover college expenses as they were promised. Todd Bowers served two tours in Iraq. "I came home proud, very proud of my service, with a Purple Heart on my chest and a Navy commendation medal with a 'V' for Valor," he told a crowd of veterans. "But I didn't come back to the education I was expecting. I came back to three different types of student loans, two of which had gone to collections." Najwa McQueen said she joined the Louisiana National Guard in 2004 on what she thought was a promise to help pay for her college education. "They kind of sell you a dream," she said after the rally. "You think you're going to get all of this stuff, and in reality, you don't get that. I just kind of believed what my recruiter told me, which is not the truth." http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/29/new.gi.rally/index.html |

While your last post has nothing to do with living conditions, Seth, it is pretty bad to do that.
What really gets me is when the military asks for the money back when a soldier is killed or wounded beyond any hope of returning to a normal life. As for the barracks, my father was in the Army in the late 60's/early 70's. He's mentioned how the barracks he was in were in need of repair just after 10 or 15 years. My brother-in-law was a Marine in the 90's, he said the same thing about the Marine barracks in Camp Pendleton. While it doesn't excuse it, this has been happening for some time. |

I've got to add something here, from personal experience...
The barracks I was in were of two kinds. One was WWII style wooden things with huge bays, familiar icons of old-timey garrison living. The other kind was fairly modern, 1950-60s style more or less 2-story ranch type modern facilities. Here's the kicker though... back in the day, there was NO, ZERO way that our Sergeant would have permitted so much as a pubic hair left on a toilet seat... much less water covering the drain and flooding a bathroom. And, if a window fell out or a ceiling caved in, our asses would have been out of the rack at 0300 hrs to fix that damn thing and, if he felt it necessary, repaint the entire barracks... policing half the base parade grounds for good measure. So... that's something to consider as well as far as how this kind of crap can be allowed to happen. Some NCO had his head up his butt. |

The Army and Marines should live in tents year-round.

I think Jerry hates Newman because he sits around making stupid comments about those who don't deserve it wishing someone would give him the Jurassic Johnson (in his tent)

It is Bush's fault. All of it. Even the problems from the 60s/70s. Allllllll Bush's fault. (what's funnier, my sarcasm or when liberals act like they care about our military?) |

Yeah yeah. I just wonder if this guy is ever going to live this down... you know, the part where his daddy raises a big stink about his living conditions. Hey at least it wasn't his mommy.

Living in bivouac is how they are living now in the feild and anyother wartime. I was in the Army and this living condition was advocated by many. So take your non-serving ass back to Mama's house for simpathy. |

I'm sure the troops are glad to know guys like PA care so much about them. They bitch if you raise their taxes one cent, but they really do care about the military. Honest injun.
When I was stationed in Bremerton WA, the temporary barracks on the base had graffiti in the stalls and in the storage room dated from WWII. My ship, the USS Constellation, was in drydock for a refit and they ripped out and replaced all the berthing. So we were stuck in temporary barracks for six months until they put the ship back in the water, and then they tied an old WWII troop transport ship alongside--the USS Gaffey, which was actually cleaner and nicer than the barracks. |
