I'll ante up Belly-boy!
Looking at the helpful "How to compost road kill" manual brought me to a current dilema I am facing at a rental property of mine. It seems as though I have a Raccoon problem under one particular house. They rock&roll at all hours of the night and scare the poor little old Lady when she is in her tub. We have set traps and put apples and corn in them to no avail. Meanwhime they are helping themselves to the duct work and plumbing (the wretched little vandals). I've called a professional critter controller and they want $189 to set a trap (even though I told them that is not working) I would have to bait and monitor the trap and call them when we get a hit. Then, they want another $89 to return and do something about it! I suppose they will go somewhere else in the neighborhood and let it go. (job security for this volitile economy) Looking online I saw a number of repellants and kill traps but I dont know if the repellant is worth it's soup and I dont want to accidently kill Patches or Fifi or any other local domestic family loved one. Help a brotha out. Who has ever handled one of these mean little squatters successfully? Any tips? |

A nice .22 calibur pistol or rifle will do the trick. Plus, you can eat them later. Raccoons are good eating (seriously). Cook them in a crock pot and add barbeque sauce. They're very fatty animals, so there is a lot of grease, but trim them up before you cook and you'll do fine.

Thanks Kevin, but I don't want my attempt to look like your avatar! Fire balls and cats just kinda seems like a bad omen.
Do you have anything that doesn't involve ricochet and gas lines in the middle of Joplin? Let me know guys. |

We had an awful problem with them getting our chickens. We used live-traps with a can of stinky, cheap cat food to catch em. We did catch our cat and dog a time or two but, for the most part mainly raccons and opossums.
Now, for disposal we call the brother-in-law and he comes and gets them. He uses them to train his coon dogs to tree. If you know anyone that has coon dogs they may take them, or may know someone that will. |

Thanks Why,
I think that may be my problem. I put apples and corn in the trap which only attracts "wholesome" "good natured farm boy" Raccoons that are just tryin to eek out a livin. I need to catch those "subway thug, inner city" raccoons, that thrive on excess, they probably want something stinky and alley crime worthy. I'll try it! keep em' commin folks. |

Thanks Mike
I'll see if I can find some of that in a local "farm and home" store. I guess it would be important to make sure it was gone for the night first huh? Then keep it scared to return. |

If you want a less expensive solution, buy a box or two of mothballs and throw them under there. It works to keep out coons, possums and field mice. Then there's always the coon hound option..

It's true about moth balls, works for a lot of critters. We live surrounded by forest, haven't seen coon, possum or even squirrel in the yard, ever... thanks to "Bo" |

Well folks,
I went with the moth ball option about 3 days ago and am happy to report that I have had no complaints from my renters! Woo Hoo! I appreciate all the input from everyone who answered (sorry Mr. Cline I just couldn't get the guts up to low crawl and shoot them down, not that it didn't sound cool Well, on to whoever wants to start something next. This could be a very useful thread over time. |

Glad moth balls worked... Yesterday the site had a good piece on how to get yourself on ALL the No-Call/No-Contact lists... phone, computer and junk mail. |
