Well, I see pro's and con's in this one. What do my well voiced compadre's say to these dubious statements?

Perhaps I'm far too cynical. Wait, no, I know I'm far too cynical. What I see in this article is another example of the young, government educated American "if, like, we all loved, like, each other and stuff, like, there'd be no, like, wars and stuff".

To her, I'd say, "You know, sweet cheeks, if we just had a major depression and no one could afford cars, we'd like, go back to horse and bugy and stuff, and while there'd be no, like, greenhouse gasses or smog or anything, we'd all be, like, waist deep in horse sh*t, and that probably, like, wouldn't be cool or anything. Typhoid and Typhus kind of suck and all that."

"And since, like, the majority of frits and veggies we would be cooking ourselves come from other parts of the country, this depression you seem to think would be so cool would make, like, oranges and stuff, you know, cost like a bajillion times more than they do now, since it wouold be, like, really expensive to bring them state to state and everything! Unless you know some secret to Missouri lemons, limes, or even oranges that the rest of us are, like, unaware of and stuff. Hope you enjoy tomatoes, wheat and watermelon. Scurvy here we come!"

"And you know, if we, like, couldn't afford wood and stuff, we'd all, like, eventually be living in caves again and drawing on cave walls, and wouldn't that, like, be so, like, cool and stuff? I mean, after all the trees around here were cut down for shelter and people were shooting one another over saplings and stuff, of course. Not that I'd, like, waste raspberries or anything, but I could so, like, se my dog on a cave wall in red barry juice. Awesome! We could have toasted wheat and tomatoes and the crush the few berries we had so I could make stick figures of my dog on the wall!"

She's a young utopian. She can be forgivven because she's so young. Others, say, from Lamar and such, have no excuse. They're just ignorant.

Amazing. She writes an article decrying vanity and consumerism next to a photo of herself bedecked with jewelry, hoop earrings and makeup.

Sounds like a case of viewing the past with rose-colored glasses. Not everybody "got through" the depression. It wasn't all camp meetings with folks singing Woody Guthrie tunes. People did what they had to in harsh circumstances. But there are still plenty of resilient folks around these days--you just have to know where to look. Try an FFA meeting or a visit to a VA hospital.

In a funny way, the young lady's viewpoint represents what a huge number of people believe... so, for her and them, what she wrote is very very radical! Big Grin

Well, here's another thought, families would be broken up as well. Look at how many men left home to find work a few counties over or even across the states. Trains might be used more, since travel by car would be out of the question, so you have more "hobos" again (lack of money, but the need to travel for work would cause more train jumping). People sent their children to orphanages because they couldn't afford to feed them. Yeah, bring on the Depression again, and feel good about, Anne. What an idiot.

Pete, I noticed that too.
