Iraq's government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Bush's apology was not enough.

"We need to try this soldier since he committed a grievous crime. This is what the Iraqi government wants. It is not satisfied with just an apology," he said.

The Iraqi cabinet said the U.S. military should also educate its soldiers to respect Islam and Muslim holy sites.



..... If this Iraqi Gov gets to lay one hand on this soldier we ought to just let them have their bullet ridden country.

We better not even start to think that our boys (and girls) are going to be subject to the legal backlash that they place on their own submissive, quivering, whimpering people.

I cannot believe that the very flee bitten Gov we are holding up on their trembling, can't get it done legs, think they need to turn and pinch off the men and women showing them how to make something of their shaken in the wind, spineless enforcement.

By Ali al-Dabbagh's standards, we ought to be able to extradite and punish any of THEIR citizens who attack us or our books.

OK, first of all, the US does not turn their servicemen over to other countries for punishment unless there is a standing agreement in place. And for most petty crimes countries will accept restitution and military punishment in place of jail time.

That being said, the military DOES educate servicemen about local customs and laws, and gives warnings on areas to avoid as well as proper behavior. I was surprised to learn you could get a ticket in Singapore for riding in a car with an elbow sticking out of the window--a Navy officer warned us about that. Didn't stop one of my friends from pissing on a dumpster, for which he got three whacks with a rattan cane.

This soldier did something stupid, for which he should get some NJP and a reprimand. And the huffy little bureaucrats should let it go at that.

Or, set up target practice on all holy books on the planet and call it even.
