RE: http://www.timesenterprise.com/homepage/local_story_118003535.html
I don't know about how John teaches or coaches but I do know how John loves his friends and family. I graduated with John. "Showboat" is a mild adjective to put upon himself. He is a class act and and almost impossible act to follow. John has heart. I'm sure his mother's teachings rubbed off on him. She would be a hard act to follow as I think about that one. Whatever John prepares to do now, it will be with the same passion he exuded as a coach. Maybe he'll just be a standup comedian full time. I am glad to have graduated with John, I am glad to know him and although we see each other about every ten years at reunion time, he is still "crazy John Booth" - endearingly, of course. We love you, John!! |

In 1975, I was fortunate enough to be a student at the Governer's Honors program in Macon, Georgia. Although mathematics was my "major," for fun I enrolled in a history course on Napoleon and Hitler. John Booth was the teacher, and I was just one face among his "new crop" that summer.
To coerce us curious teenagers to think in a new way about the terrible subjects of the course, John began the lecture, "Imagine Adolph Hitler sitting on a toilet." Instantly, we were putty in his hands. Years later, John's brother married my sister, and we became brothers in-law-in-law. I am glad I have had the opportunity to know John in both capacities, his natural-born role as teacher and as joint members of extended southern families. I last saw John some months ago at the first birthday party of our mutual great neice. He is truly one-of-a-kind. Congratulations on your retirement, John. Your influence as a teacher, which extends well beyond Thomas County, will not soon be forgotten. |
