Brew Fest Story

Looks like it's gone.

Wonder if the part about Willie Nelson is true. If that were the case, they really screwed up.

I think in the current climate of so many alcohol related deaths in Mankato in such a short period of time, the City is absolutely right in enforcing its new efforts to curb binge drinking, and the promoting of drinking as a form of entertainment or recreation.

Hentges' remarks come off as being inflammatory, and I never believe half of what he says because in the exercise of his position of City Manager he has been a political and inflammatory personality, but events like Brewfest just don't serve a purpose as entertainment nor as a role model in the community, and I am very relieved that the City is upholding its liquor laws.

I think people wanting to see Willie Nelson would do better going to Wal*mart and picking up his concert DVDs.

Good riddance to bad Rubbish. Now let`s ban cigarette smoking everywhere but in an individual`s home, and only if there are never any minoirs present. All violations punishable by stoning.

It's not a limit on how many drinks you can have. It is an answer to the binge drinking problem that strictly says you can not have an all you can drink business (the buffet style of drinking) and that you can only purchase so many drinks at one time.

Congratulations Mankato on running another good thing out of town. Remember Peoples Fair and the thousands who used to attend that...I do. I enjoyed it very much each year with friends and was something to look forward to. Because of a knee jerk reaction and outcry over a couple individuals stupidity this is now your outcome. I really hope it moves to North Mankato just to rub the salt in the wound a little. I'm sure they would welcome it with open arms.

As for HealthyOne - people like you need to stop your high and mighty quests to control what the masses do just because you disagree with it. Brewfest serves a great purpose. It allows everyone who attends to sample and see the various new styles of brews that are out there. I was a home brewer at one time and have many friends who also brew and they love this event. You don't like alcohol then don't attend. I also go for the music as well although this years fell flat.

Are you kidding? You need to move to Russia where they want to control your every move. While you are on your crusade, why don't you ban sex because it spreads disease and kills millions every year and ban driving because of all the car accidents that happen every year. Wake up and smell the democracy man. If you don't like drinking, stay away from the bars, don't like smoking, stay away from people that smoke. Better yet, just stay home and shut off your Internet.

I disagree with the situation that 6 or so young men and women have died of alcohol poisoning and/or related deaths in the past year and a half.

I agree with dozens upon dozens, if not hundreds, of concerned law enforcement city officials, MSU and peer higher education officials, as well as thousands of students, staff, faculty and parents locally who are even more alarmed than I am.

Local units of government issue liquor licenses to on sale and off sale establishments. They also enforce State DUI laws. It isn't "control," it's "regulation," and using the Police powers of the unit of government to be responsible for the health and safety of its taxpayers, voters and visitors.

so its fair that if 50.1% of people favor something it should be law, and the other 49.9% just have to accept it? the founding fathers recognized that the masses could be too easily corrupted by tyrants "media today", thats why they invented a bi cameral system of congress. But the ff's didnt see how easily politicians could be corrupted, or at least i hope anyway

I don't think that a festival such as Brew Fest is the problem behind binge drinking. That is easily accomplished by "starting your night early" with a bottle of the spirits of your choice.
I have a hard time comprehending that "thousands of students" have a problem with drinking in general. This is usually the "authorities" telling the young ADULTS what/when/how to think.

I think it is too bad when society as a whole has to adjust their style of living to accomadate those who have a personal problem with whatever is being done.

Many more than 6 individuals have died in auto accidents in the past 18 months. Do you advocate that everyone takes the train/bus so we don't have any more auto deaths?

No more People's Fair? That was a blast sitting on the hill tripping on acid and smoking weed right in front of the cops at age 14.Listening to Judd and City Mouse. I went every year until I moved from Mankato. Sounds like Mankato is turning into Des Moines.

Funny, the story didn't mention how many concerts City Manager Hentges has promoted.

I've been involved in a few and the 50%, generally non-refundable upfront money is called a deposit. SOP for most shows, especially when it's not being put on by a well known entity and also as compensation should a show be canceled by the promoter. I've even asked for them with local bands at bars that have had a questionable reputation for paying or canceling engagements, not bad enough to not play there, just questionable.

I love it when someone who knows nothing about the business presumes to think they do.

I didn't read this as Hentges disputing how concerts are booked, but rather he disputed Gehrke's claim that he wasn't willing to make the deposit for Nelson because he wasn't getting an answer from the city about whether an all-you-can-drink deal would be allowed. Hentges's comment that he got a timely answer, just not the answer that he wanted is probably true.
