Just wondering...

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks (and trailers) are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago ?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in Des Moines ?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters stealing high-end tennis shoes and big screen television sets?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver say that he wants to rebuild a "vanilla" Iowa , because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates white, rural people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever again

Just wondering?...this is a spam mail, much repeated 2-cent KKKarl Rove-led hatchet attack on black people...why, because Iowa has mostly white people, they just didnt need any help?....hey stupid. the waters are still up,the misery still here, and it`s far too early to assess the damage in terms of lives affected. So this column seems very premature.
And quit making apologies for the disaster Katrina was; it certainly compounded by idiots that Bush2 appointed as political favor paybacks who had no idea how to handle a catastrophe.
p.s.- those infamous Dixie chicks indeed had the last laugh...they were right on the money from the gitgo about this embarrassment of a Leader, Ha!

The questions there prove some good points. However, there seems to be one major difference in the Iowa River Floods and Katrina. Namely, the way Iowa flooded leaves some people in many communities homeless. Those people most likely have other family and friends not effected by the floods where they can stay. Even in cities hit hardest by the flood, the entire city is not underwater. (yes, some of the smaller TOWNS are, but the bigger cities, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Des Moines, etc are not and even of most of the smaller towns are not completely lost). I've already heard many people say their plans for this weekend and next are to help family/friends clean up if the water is down at their houses.

However, in New Orleans, the entire city was flooded. Including the entire inner city. Many of those who did not live in the inner city either had friends/family who were not effected living outside the area OR they had the resources to take care of themselves. Whereas, most of those in Inner city New Orleans (and yes, when I say "inner city" I mean a population that consists MOSTLY of underprivileged minority families) have their entire family and friends in the same area being effected by the same crisis. These people had no one to turn to and to make matters worse, they did not have the financial resources to get up and go. So they were stranded.

And yes, there are some Iowans who are stranded. However, there are numerous red cross shelters set up for these people. I've not seen any stories of mass amounts of people who are forced to live in busses or make shift camp sites or any of the other horrible things the victims of New Orleans went through.

And this is NOT to say that there are not many poeple in Iowa tragically suffering because of the floods... but because of the difference in the focus and nature on those left homeless and the manner in which the community as a whole was effected between the Iowa River Floods and Katrina, it has been much easier for Iowa and the individual victims to help ourselves.

Not to say I don't think that the Iowa river flods don't deserve more attention, I can understand why its not. Expecially since there's the whole Obama-McCain thing going on right now. Ultimately, news is about ratings. Poeple just aren't as concerned about Iowa right now.

I heard a report in church this morning from a couple that were helping this week in the hardest hit area of Cedar Rapids. They said that the relief agencies (i.e. Red Cross, F.E.M.A., etc.) are very organized and are assisting the people of that area.

Not saying I believe everything I hear on the news (I've heard them say lots of "oopses") but last night they were saying the Midwest floods (or maybe Iowa flood) could be one of the top ten natural disasters in America's history. Wow.

I also think that the Katrina disaster focused on one large city that was destroyed. The coverage of the Iowa floods is so wide-spread and the media is mostly focusing on the larger cities (Cedar Rapids, Des Moines). Now that the initial flooding in Iowa is over, the media has moved on. You don't see coverage of the clean up as much. Just wait until food prices go up....

Something else that no one is mentioning are the emergency plans that are in place and how they were carried out by the individual states instead of waiting for the federal government to step in. Iowa didn't just sit back, we were pro-active instead of re-active. We knew it was coming and took steps to minimize the damage as much as possible. Louisiana was warned for many years and did nothing and when Katrina hit everything was the fault of the federal government instead of laying blame where it should have been. A corrupt state government that did very little to help their own people. Maybe it's the values of the midwest, we take care of ourselves and help each other instead of crying gimme, gimme.

Another difference between Katrina and these floods is timing. People in hurricane areas usually have a few days notice.
But, many of the people in Cedar Rapids and elsewhere found out about the rising floodwaters when the police knocked on their doors at 2am and the water was already on their front steps!

Cleve:
I just wanted to point out that you forgot to add Rush Limbaugh in your post this time - I'm sure it was just an oversight.

Iowa will probely get some help in a year or two if then. Just look at New Orlens they are just now as of yesterday and today news(CNN) getting new thing that have been stored in Louisiana warehouse that was meant for there. Only six truck have been sent now some things went to other place! Oh ya we ran out of money give now! Maybe each state could hold a Telethon to help raise funding for their states to help Salvation Army, Red Cross, etc. I have said enought.

lol...mere words cannot describe my love for Rush... and he will be around for a long time, what with that new mega-contract he signed this week.Numbers escape me, but it boggles the mind.Um...you see,he`s just like me and you. Only lots richer and maybe on drugs. At least Rush has good taste in smoke;he and I both share a fondness for Cuban Partagas Lucitanias. I commend him on his ability to milk the admiration of the Gullible everywhere. And I defend his right to say whatever he wants to say. He`s a real friend of the common man. wink. nudge.
Now,let`s laugh.Here`s a good one.
It is absolutely mind-numbing, the tally that the CNN talking head Glenn Beck pulls in,something like 10 million per year. I watch him now and then, and am amazed at what a little tool he is.Comic brilliance, even better than Steve Doucy, another train-wreck,that one courtesy of Fox and Friends.Unintentionally funny.
Lastly, Happy Fourth to all of you,left/right,inbetween.God Bless this great country, and I am thankful I live in a country where I can get away with savaging the likes of big gov/Bush2 and his sycophants, without fear of being whisked away to an unknown place and tortured...

At least for now!

Let's pray it's either a Democrat or an Independent elected to the presidency.

A term of McBush would be devastate our world credibility and our economy. I guess I should say, the economy of the average (if there's still an average) middle class and below.

this country will be bankrupt if we get McCain, and you bet as soon as they bring back the draft,a must if we continue to fight "terrorism" over other countries `oil fields, then the real sh*t will hit the fan.
there was a pretty good article in the horrible liberal paper, nytimes, about Rush Limbaugh... he is, by far, the only one right of center with an actual talent...and his diss of blowhard O`Reilly was priceless. [ "Ted Baxter",indeed! ]
