I am in the process of writing a complete history of fires and firefighting in Clinton and Lyons and could use additional pictures. I have most that have previously been published, posted in this forum, plus a number of my personal pics but could use more. I am particularly interested in pics of motorized equipment, identified firemen pics, good quality fire pics, etc. If you have anything that you think would be good for the book, I would love to have them. All eras, old and new, are needed. Of course, appropriate credit will be given. For your further information, this book when completed will be handed over to the Clinton County Historical Society for whatever they choose to do with it in the manner of publishing it in paper or pdf (computer) media formats.

Terry, do you have the ones that I previously posted on the "Old Clinton Pictures" thread of the Clinton High fire, and the fire at Machael's? Also, do you have any pictures of the fire at Paaske's that you could share on that thread?

I have all the pictures that were posted in this forum - old pics - which are pretty much already in the book. Am hoping to get some private pics that haven't been printed in the numerous Clinton history books. As far as Paaske, all I have is what are already available from the printed books. I have my own from KROS fire, Anchor Inn and a couple of house fires that I eventually intend to put into the book. Right at the moment, I just finished (except for later editing, additions, etc), the history of Clinton and Lyons through the end of 1921, when Clinton became fully motorized. Am trying to find pics of the original equipment but seems to be few and far between - but then again, I have just begun my search for photos as up to now, my primary interest has been basic research. One loose end I have, is whatever became of the old Clinton steam fire engine. I suspect it was just junked out at some point, but have found no hard proof and it is driving me nuts - and thats a short trip.

I may not have any pix to share, but I am definitely interested in your book! Keep us posted when it's available for sale. |

I'd certainly like to see them. I don't think I have the Armstrong pics as yet, but like I said before - am just getting started in locating pics. I have made a copy of the book available on CD at the Museum and the Library Root Cellar. It is a draft copy through 1921 when the FD became fully motorized. I do have material later than that, of course, but I cleaned it all out to make the CD. It is not for sale or for copying at this time but they may make it available for reference only. Not my decision as I'm just compiling it.

Terry - my great-grandfather served in the Lyons Fire Dept. I don't recall dates off the top my head, but I do know I have a very old group picture (so old it's crumbling). I think names are even written on the back. Will try scanning it on my computer and see if it reproduces. Do you have an email addy where I could send it to you? Also my dad served on the "old" 4-11 volunteer crew back in the mid to late 70s. I know I have a picture of him in uniform but I think it was from the Herald. Not sure if you're going to cover that aspect of the department, but if you are and want to chat w/ him, my dad still lives in Clinton.

Terry, if it isn't inconvient go to Central Fire Station and explain to them what you are doing and if they wouldn't mind if you looked thru the scrapbooks they have. Keep us updated on here of your progress.

Sookie, if you are able to scan those pictures, could you post them here? The rest of us would like to see them too. Thanks!

I have been working with Chief Mark R. on the book and he will be providing me with some material as I request it. The scrapbook I used many years ago and has been helpful in making sure I don't miss anything but I am going through the newspapers day by day for every year looking for material. I print a copy for every item I think I need so that I have it available right in front of me when I write it up. Am also attempting, with marginal success, to photograph images from the microfiche as many of the old photos have apparently been destroyed. Any photos that anyone has, can be sent to my email if desired. And absolutely yes, the 4-11 will be covered as I also covered the reserve firemen in WWII. I don't have a finish date calculated but if I can keep up the pace and if gas prices don't go too much higher, I could conceivably have it done in a year to a year and a half. My email is terrynglenda@comcast.net.

May I offer another suggestion to you Terry? Contact Charlene Bielema at the Herald, and see if someone can take the time to help you go through the newspaper's "morgue" of old photos. It obviously won't be high on their priority list, but I'm sure they'll be as helpful as they can.
